Looking for opinions for optics on my new 527
« on: July 14, 2020, 09:23:24 PM »

So I picked up a new 527 yesterday in .204 Ruger at my LGS. It is my 4th CZ rifle but my first .204 in any brand. It came with the factory 1” rings.

After I purchased the gun, I went to Cabelas to shop scopes. Ended up getting sold on a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24x50. It is a 30mm tubed scope and they had no dove tail rings in 30mm in stock. So I ordered a set from Amazon. should be in next week or so.

question is this: Do you guys think that is too much scope (magnification) for that gun. The truth is that I will rarely be shooting over 300 yds and mostly <200. I spent $400 plus tax on the scope. Since ot has not been mounted yet, I’ve been kicking around in my head returning the scope and maybe going with something more like a 5-14x40 in a Leupold or Nikon.

I have Nikons and Leupolds but have never owned a Vortex. I have Nikons on two other CZ rifles as a matter of fact.

Any opinions are welcome.

Will get better pics once it is complete

What are you planning to use the rifle for, varmints or target shooting?
It's not saving any water if you have to flush it over and over....

For varmint shooting it's a good range. The 204 Ruger can reach out a long way (400 yards plus) and cleanly kill pest animals under 10 pounds. Useful on Coyotes out to 300 yards with proper shot placement.

I have a 22 inch barreled 204 AR I use for prairie dogs, it's probably the perfect round for them. I've made shots as far as 560 yards (laser measure) but thought that was more than a little lucky. Those little bullets start to drift with the wind, after 300 to 400 yards a whole lot.

I bought the same scope as you. I have no problems with it. It's clear, adjustments are spot on. I  don't think it's too much power. You can always turn it to a lower power. You can't turn a 14 power scope up to a 20 power. What's the old saying, "you can't hit what you can't see". A friend was undecided about max scope power. I turned the power of my scope to 14 and let him shoot a group. Then I turned it up to 25 power and he shot another group. The group at 25 power was much smaller. I'd shoot it and enjoy.

I have a Weaver 6.5-20X on a 204 Ruger 527 Varmint. I'm guessing you'll find the Vortex 6-24X useful out to 300 yards.

maybe a little target shooting but mostly varmint duty.

Then its probably a case of which scope is the clearest and works best with your vision. I did pretty well with all scopes for a long time, but now days I need clarity to count points, etc. But if all things are otherwise equal between your choices, I would think the higher magnification best for varmints, depending on where you hunt.
