Wobbly is costing me $$ - Again!
« on: April 08, 2020, 05:49:36 PM »
I recently posted a thread about my old Taurus model 80 38 Special revolver. There is certain allure about a revolver with its rich history in our country. Countless stories have been handed down through the generations. I guess it's us romantic types that fall in love easily that are most afflicted with revolveritis.

Wobbly made a reply in the attached post awhile back that led to my recent redistribution of wealth transfer to Berry's Bullets. I look forward to trying these out and they will arrive soon. They are the 148 grain wad cutters - one being the hollow base and the other is the standard plated one. I must say they look and and they each are in stock. I'll let you all know how they perform for me.

Here is the link to the post where Wobbly's reply is found: index.php?topic=107751.msg836682#msg836682

I've really enjoyed playing with those things. Watch out and don't load them into PPU and PMC brass, they will bulge at the base of the bullet. If that bulge goes over 0.380" then they probably won't chamber. It's not the bullet's fault, it's the brass.

PS. If you use Dillon dies I'm happy to modify your seating anvil for you.

Earl, thank you for your comment and I take it that you like them. Do you have a favorite recipe that you'd like to share?

Wobbly, I checked my seating die and it is designed with a floating seating cup that nests in a bushing. The mouth will barely squeeze inside a case and I believe it may work as you have described. I'll let you know soon. They are coming home this week. Fortunately, I do not have any of those cases you mentioned. I do have various mfg brass, but mainly Winchester and Starline.

I'm going to try some Sport Pistol with these.

To seat wad cutters properly, they need to be about 0.005-0.008" below the case mouth in order to apply a slight crimp over the meplat of the bullet. Because my cases were slightly different lengths, my stock Dillon seating stem/ anvil was striking a few of the longer case mouths and buckling those cases. It took me a long time to understand what was going on. So I cut a small notch in the nose of the anvil to alleviate any interference, and the problem was fixed. Just be aware this can happen.  [Paragraph Modified]

I'm going to try some Sport Pistol with these.

On my list too !  So far AA No.2 is tops.

But balance this against all the orthopedic doctor visits you're missing due to not having to bend over and recover brass !!

The Wobbly seating stem is the hot ticket for smooth loading, 3.4 -3.5 gr HP38 works well for me in my S&W model 19 comp K. Load for accuracy not FPS.

Thank you gentlemen for your comments and advice. My bullets came to town today, but my carrier did not deliver them - too big for my mailbox. I'll have to venture out tomorrow morning to pick them up at the PO.

Earl, if I had a Dillon I would definitely be asking for one of Wobbly's seating stems, and thanks for the recipe!

Wobbly, I'm hoping my seating die will work and I'll find out soon. Thank you for insight and I'll certainly be paying attention. I also appreciate the recipe.

As for the Orthopedist, I hope I can stay away!
