What is very close?  I usually have a variation of 4.33 to 4.39 (.06 gr.) when I check prior to reloading session.  I am aiming for 4.36gr W231 which gives me plenty of PF for IDPA SSP with my P01.  I avg around 1040fps at this drop weight.  Normally I am within .06 after only 5/6 drops.  I never have to reset my PD, it has been rock solid for over 1.5 yrs.  I only reload for 9mm IDPA shooting now.

I've been reloading on Dillion equipment for over 25 years and have found their powder measures to be very accurate and seldom need adjustment unless you are changing powder lots. My loading machines are bolted down to a solid 2" thick wooden bench and the powder measures are grounded. I've always used small grain or ball powders and never had any problems.

I can't quote a number because I don't have a scale to measure to hundredths of a Grain. But it's good enough where I regularly see single digit SD numbers on my chrono. That's good enough for me.

Because of the above, I'm wondering how you are measuring to hundredths of a grain ? Secondly, I'm wondering why you bother to measure to one hundredth of a grain ?

Explain "PD".

I think he means powder dispenser. I'd like to know how he's measuring tenths of a grain as well. Never seen a reloading scale that accurate.

The gempro 250 has a resolution down to 0.02gr.  I don't see them for sale anymore but they were/are great little scale for the money.  You just have to let them warm up before using.

I compared mine to calibrated lab scale equipment at work and it wasn't that different from a repeatability and accuracy standpoint.

It will be a bummer when mine dies as I don't think there is anything out there at the price point paid for the gempro 250 anymore.

Cheers,
Toby

That's measuring to a gnats bottom side.
I have been loading for a while and have never considered measuring to the 1/100 of a g.
What do you measure your OAL to?

Now that I have around 1200 rounds through my Dillon, a new 550C, I am getting satisfactory results. I dislike adjusting the powder measure as it takes so many drops to get things to settle in, and then adjust again etc, etc. I now have a second powder measure so that I can use two different powders or charge weights without adjusting!!!

I also ordered a second seating die with the same idea in mind. I accept the accuracy of the charge weights as a result of metering by volume, which is not the same as metering by weight, but it is close enough for the short range shooting we do with pistols.

One goal many of us had in long range shooting load development, was to use a load that had some margin. The load I had for my 223 would stand a charge weight of 0.1 grain either way and still shoot the same POA. I would like to think that a similar situation could be had with our pistol cartridges.

Richard

There will always be a variation with the powder measure. However, can greatly minimize this by keeping the powder measure at least 1/2 to 3/4 full. This makes a huge difference in having less variation in your charge weights.

As for your load variation of 0.1 Gr either way, you can do that with pistol cartridges by doing what I said in my previous statement.

I do use the GemPro 250 which measures to .01.  Its not that I deem it necessary to measure that precise, it is because my GemPro measures that precisely.  Besides I think it is nice to know if your scale is 4.10 or 4.19 which is almost .1 difference which is undetectable with a scale only measuring to .1.

I don't chase the hundredths, but like to know if I am close to 4.1 or 4.2.

As for OAL I am looking for 1.100 for my P01.  This OAL also works in my wifes Sig and my other CZ P10C, one size fits all!  I use IGaging EZ Cal for measuring OAL and yes it measures out to .001 whether I want it to or not.
As for PD i meant PM for powder measure.

I guess I was trained in military that if you aim small you miss small.  I may be considered too careful in reloading but I love the consistency and reliability of my reloaded rounds for IDPA match use.  Zero FTFs or jams in over 7K rounds fired in the 3 firearms metioned above....I want to keep it that way.  I attribute my good results to the teaching/advice I get from this forum.  I learned how to reload by great advice given here!!  :)
