Another please help me decide thread!
« on: June 03, 2020, 11:11:01 PM »
I mean please be the terrible enablers that you (we) are to help me decide to spend my money on another handgun which I really do not need  :P

Synopsis: I suffer from not owning a full size semi-auto handgun complex (barrel length of over 4") and I am itching to spend the money which I know I shouldn't (no significant other to whine, nag, etc; so no worries there). I am a CA resident and I currently own a Cajunized P-01 and also a Cajunized RAMI safety model (10 rd mag limitations apply but the ability to be able to accept higher cap mags are also important to me). I like to collect and to shoot handguns as sport so self-defense when it comes to some outlier scenarios is not that important to me (no CCW here in CA). I don't believe in zombies, urban warfare and defending myself against a bunch of tweekers if I suddenly come upon a meth lab when hiking in the deep brush! With all that said, here are my choices:

A- Obviously an SP-01 (safety model is what we can get here in CA). If I go for this, I will immediately go for the CGW pro-kit (defensive kit, not the comp kit despite what I had said above). I may also upgrade the factory sights in addition to changing out the factory grips plus having the gunsmith polish the internal parts for me. Making a short story long, I will end up in that SP-01 over 2 times the price of a fresh outta CZ box SP-01.

B- Never owned a Sig but with the amount of $ which I will be spending under scenario A, I can just go for a Sig Legion (9mm) and then stop it right there at that. I don't know much about Sigs but to think that I will not goof around with an $1200ish retail price Sig any further is I think fooling myself.

C- Can reluctantly accelerate the budget to just go for a Dan Wesson 1911 .45 ACP Pointman or the Bobtail (These are the choices on our DOJ roster. I prefer the Bobtail but it's more $). I have always lusted after the iconic 1911 but then again, it's lust vs need. Another option in here with 1911s can possibly be a Springfield TRP but if I go this route, my heart will be set on a DW which is owned by CZ anyway.

Let's say that I will shoot them all reasonably well. Buying all three is not an option :D The last option will put me in close to spending almost 2K out the door which will make me uncomfortable.

Get the Sig X5 legion. It’s about $900. No need to upgrade anything. It’s also cut for Romeo 1 Pro, DPP and Trijicon RMR (fits Holosun too).

Thanks George16 but I had omitted a crucial factor: DA/SA is preferred to maintain consistency (I know that 1911 is SA but as already alluded, it's a lust thing with that platform more than anything).

Also the P320 X5 is not on our CA-DOJ roster of approved handguns. But I do thank you for your input.

ETA: I had mistakenly said Legion whereas I had meant to say the Sig Scorpion! Can't find them anyway!

casinostocks!  i did exactly what you are proposing with buying an sp-01.  bought a safety model sp-01 recently and before i even picked it up had he CGW pro pkg. on it's way in the mail. added two mecgar 16 rd clips with metal base plates, cz tactical diamond grips, and $30 worth of grip screws .  i did the same modifications to my 8 yr old p-01 and did all the polishing myself. The experience i learned then and the tutorials here and on utube was very helpfull doing the pro pkg and polishing of my new sp-01. for now the stock sights will stay on but could be a set of tfx night sights in the future. $650 for the sp-01 was only $75 more than i payed for my p-01 in 2012. the cgw parts, grips, and sights haven't went up much since then . However like you stated when your all done it's about twice what the pistol alone cost.

Thank you Sir :)

I think no matter what I decide to buy apart from SP-01, I will still mess around with it because I know myself! Not wanting to go down another rabbit hole, then why not just stay with the CZ platform which I own 2 of its handguns already.

I have a Cajunized SP01T, a SIG 220 carry elite upgraded by the Sig Armorer, and a DW Specialist Commander & TCP

Here is my take- all are fine guns, the CZ and Sig better with the customization than stock.  Of the three brands, I shoot the CZ more often, as I shoot IDPA regularly and 9mm is cheaper with easier recoil.

If I was in your shoes, knowing what I know, I’d get the CZ cajunized. If you were not in CA, I’d get the DW TCP in 9mm.

The cajunized SP01 is a joy to shoot, and fits my hand perfectly. Sights are on target when I draw the gun, almost no recoil.

As I don’t live in CA, and have other choices available, I’d go for the TCP in 9mm. Well made, superbly accurate, great OOTB trigger, it needs no aftermarket improvements. I’m a fan of the sight set up of the TCP, as well as the mag funnel. Slightly more difficult to field strip than my Specialist but gets easier every time. It also fits my holsters for the specialist as well.  One of my favorite guns.

The SIG 220 is a reliable accurate gun, and much improved after the sig armorer worked on it. I like the gun a great deal, it’s just the CZ ergos work for me much better than the sig.

So to recap, go with the CZ, send it to CGW. You will not be disappointed. Another thought- see if You can buy a gussied up CZ directly from CGW. Friend of mine did that and it accelerated the time it took to get the gun.

Good luck

Excellent piece and very convincing good Sir. The more that I dug into this, combined with my familarties with my CGW'ed CZs (but as already stated elsewhere gunsmithing) the more I keep coming back to tricking out an SP-01 for the same reasons: CZ offers one of the best ergos and best natural POAs when under duress and stress. It is almost like the handgun wants to aim itself in a good way!!!

TBH, I had never looked into purchasing a "gussied" up one directly from CGW! I will contact them and see as to how that will work with CA & FFL in here.

Thank you again Tanners.
