How deep into case should expansion be performed for 9mm
« on: August 28, 2020, 01:08:20 AM »
Quick question for the experts. I’m loading 147 gr Berrys round nose. My expander is a NOE plug inside a Lee universal expander die. This mimics a Lyman expander dimensions...0.353...

Should expansion cover the full seating depth of the bullet?  If so it’s deeper for the 147 compared with the 124 gr bullet, Obviously, because the bearing surface of the 147 is longer

Never flare more than is needed to start the bullet in the case. Doing so will ruin neck tension which will result in loose bullets and problems like bullet set back and that is something you do not want to experience.

Never flare more (larger) than is needed to start the bullet in the case.

...or deeper than your Taper Crimp die can completely close up.

Perhaps I’m expanding too deeply into case, this may explain my high SD and ES figures.

I judged expansion as a related but different c/w flaring. I expand in one station and flat in another currently. I need barely any flare for 0.356 Berry RN.  Do I need to expand at all if the bullet is seating well?

I don't think there is a need as long as the bullet stays put during indexing of the press. The Berry's bullets have a very generous radius on the base. I don't flare loading them on a SS press and get great results.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

Expand the case as far down as the bullet will be seated. Flare the case mouth enough that the bullet does not contact the case mouth.
The case ID should be 0.001-0.002" under bullet diameter AFTER case expansion.
