Just wanted to say that I finally got around to doing this today. Knocked all of the gunk out of the trouble areas with some cheapo CRC Brakleen and hit it until it was dry with the compressor. After reoiling I'm about half an hour into racking the slide, dry firing, and playing with the decocker and so far no more baby-poo colored leaks from any of the moving parts. Thanks much for the solid advice.

Spray it with break cleaner and you are good to go . Protect your eyes though it will get messy!

I used to love cleaning guns, now its a chore. I think I will try this route. I normally clean every 1k rounds or so. I've been using lucas gun oil with the metal needle tip (my fav), and for the slide I use a 50/50 mix of it with red high temp bearing grease.

A couple specific questions:
  • Do you grease your comp ports to reduce carbon buildup?
  • Do you use a pinpoint oil applicator like the little lucas bottles? or a spray oil or wipe rag?
  • Do you remove grips everytime you clean the gun, this might be a deal breaker for me.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is when you brake clean all the junk out, then blow it with compressed air, how to you ensure the inside of the gripframe metal in all those tiny creavases are oiled? An oily wipe rag is good, but will miss the tiny spots, I would think a spray mist and then specific contact points and slide grease would be ideal. I might try that tonight and see what gives.

Prior to leaving for a match, I spray Pam into my comp ports to prevent any sticking of carbon. It also help in reducing foul up by using thick plated, JHP and TMJ/CMJ bullets because the exposed base of regular FMJ will deposit lead into the comp.

I also use pinpoint oil applicator in between cleanings. For regular cleanings, I spray everything (I remove the optic and mount) with non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner, blow it dry, put oil, blow it again (this time just to spread the oil into the crevices), wipe it down and do a final oiling.

I remove the grips and optic/mount every time.
