CZ S2 optics
« on: July 26, 2020, 03:39:20 PM »
Hey Guys,
I have a couple of questions and hoping someone could help me out.
I'm picking up a CZ S2 in a couple of weeks, and I'm thinking to put a RMR on it. This is going to be my first pistol to have a sight on.
My question is , 1. does the slide MUST need to be milled to install the sight? I did some research, and I found some products that does NOT need mill work. so, which is better regarding to accuracy , mill or no mill?
2. what mount (company) is good for RMR? for mill and for no mill.
Thanks in advance for the comments.

1. It can me milled so the optic will not be too high. You can use a dovetail mount with your red dot if you want but it’ll be too high. If you only use it for range plinking, it’ll suffice. I have mine milled by Primary Machine for use in USPSA.

2. RMR is a type of red dot made by trijicon. When you say RMR, I think you’re talking about red dots. Again, if for range plinking, by the cheapest you can afford. If for home defense, I recommend Trijicon’s RMR. For competition, I recommend Delta Point Pro, sig Romeo 3Max or 3XL, C-more RTS2 etc.

3. CGW, CZC and Primary Machine.

If you’re looking to buy a brand new S2 and want a red dot, then why not look for the optics ready version to begin with?

Thank you, I do mean Trijicon RMR Type 2. I am not planning to use the gun for any competition, just for fun shooting. I was debating between Trijicon SRO and RMR type 2, but the optics is a bit too big on the gun to me. Thanks for the input and suggestions. very appreciated.

I live in CA, and I got the gun from my friend. so, no other options. S2 is not on CA roster....  :'(

I had my Shadow 2 milled for the Trijicon SRO (same footprint as the RMR Type 2).  It’s not the cheapest option, but buy once/cry once kind of applies here.

There are four companies I would recommend to do the milling on the Shadow 2:  CGW, CZC, Primary Machine, and Fire 4 Effect.  Price ranges anywhere from $200 to $600 depending on what you want them to do to the gun such as additional lightening cuts on the slide to reduce reciprocating mass.  Back when I had my S2 milled we were under a 45 oz weight limit for USPSA Carry Optics division (what I use my gun for).  As such, the slide had to be lightened significantly to bring the overall weight + mag below 45 oz.  The extra milling work drives the price up.

Now that the USPSA Carry Optics weight limit has been raised to 59 oz, all you need to have milled is the optic pocket.  That drops the price down to $200-350 depending on who does it and how you want it refinished.

CZC does offer a plate system so down the road you can buy a different adapter plate if you switch optic brands that use a different foot print.

CGW, Primary Machine, and F4E do direct milling, no plate.

I went with F4E and have a second S2 that I’m going to be sending them soon to have an identical pair for competition.

I have the Shadow 2 optic ready and for me the beauty of this gun is I can change optics easily with the change of the mounting plate.  Initially I mounted a Vortex Venom. Once I was able to obtain a Sig Romeo1 PRO (which is far and away my favorite RDS) I then ordered the appropriate plate from CZC and made the change. For me that is the beauty of an "optic ready" gun.
Second, the OR version of the S2, at the rear of the slide it widens slightly so that with the plate and optic mounted they are virtually flush with the side of  the slide for a great custom  look installation.
The one negative, and for me it is a minor one, of the S2 optic ready is when necessary to remove the extractor, the optic and plate need to be removed to gain access to the pin that holds the extractor in place. That said, once I do that I will re-install the plate without the ejector pin, mark the plate from the bottom through the extractor pin opening then remove the plate and drill a hole consistent with the ejector pin location. In the future then I will only need remove the optic to gain access to the extractor pin.
If anyone has other thoughts on how best to mark/remove the extractor pin on a S2 OR with the plate/optic mounted, I would love to hear them.
