457 Varmint cleaning
« on: April 09, 2021, 01:28:30 AM »
After about 100 rounds of rws subsonic hp, I decided to break out the bore scope and have a look. No carbon ring. Just a few small streaks of lead. As Joe says, don't break out the bore scope unless you want to clean the barrel. I wanted to try something different, so I made a couple of passes with lead remover cloth. It did ok, but left lead in the barrel. I tried something that I have been using for a long time. Remington 40x bore cleaner. Ten strokes and no more lead and left the bore like a mirror. I'll have to start using it more often.  I use 1 1/8 inch patches with a bore tech 22 rimfire jag and 22rf rod. Nice and tight but not too tight.
I  don't know what type of lube rws uses, but no hint of a carbon ring. Now to reseason the barrel and put some rounds down range.

I'd like to read what you find about the re-season.  My MTR seems to shoot perfectly right after cleaning with the SK Rifle Match with only running a dry patch first to get some of the oil film out.  I bet the waxy Norma will react a little differently, maybe 10 rounds to stabilize but I don't know yet.  I don't see much lead buildup but do see some carbon after 50 rounds or so that is easily removed with a nylon brush, some Kroil, and then a few patches.  The CZ barrel cleans up very quickly, unlike the rough Savage barrel.

I shot 50 rounds of rws subsonic hp's today. Reseasoning the barrel took about 20 rounds. The first 4 five shot groups hovered around an inch + or-. Groups 5 through 10  were decreasing in size to just a hair over 6 tenths of an inch.
Looked through the barrel with the bore scope,  just very light lead streaks. Going to monitor the leading. I think  the light leading comes from shooting through a clean barrel. To me,  it seems that the rws ammo shoots very clean. I'll look again after 100 rounds and see how much difference there is in leading and powder fouling. After that I'll check after every 100 rounds to monitor the barrel.

I bought a pack of the lead removing cloth (Birchwood Casey??) several years ago while trying to clean a really nasty chrome lined AR15 barrel that had been used with a .22 conversion kit and Federal plated ammo (that rifle will never have .22's shot through it again).

I had spent several hours with several types of cleaners, brushes, patches, cleaning rods, drills even and gotten a lot of the lead out before the lead removing cloth was used.

While it did finally result in a clean barrel I have great doubt that had I started with the lead removing cloth I'd have had the barrel clean by the time I ran out of cloth.

I'd be more inclined to use a cleaner specifically made for lead removal.  Can't say any of the long list I used was better than any of the others.  I'd be looking for something different, next time.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?
