p-09 pro grade kit decocker problem
« on: May 14, 2021, 08:48:30 AM »
Hi to all,

please bear with my limited English please.

I've been using the pro grade kit in my p-07 for two years or so and it's been perfect. Recently I made a decision to go bigger and bought p-09 thinking these two were basicly the same gun with fully compatible parts. So I took the kit out of the p-07 and installed it in the new bone stock p-09. The trigger ended up even better, really smooth DA, very crisp SA and beautiful short reset with no overtravel at all.
The problem is when I decock the hammer it falls all the way down to the firing pin. Looks like the sear stays up a bit too long so it doesn't catch the hammer at all. When I take off the slide and slightly push the sear with a finger while decocking it catches the hammer fine.

What part is causing it? I am using the non painted sear spring from the kit, so it is the stronger one if I am correct. Getting even stronger spring is not possible.
Since I am not from the US sending it to CGW is not an option, I need to figure it out myself.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

J.

Check to see that the bushing on the left side decocker shaft moved out of position when you disassembled the parts.  Take a look at these videos and check your installation.

It's been a long time since I had my P-09 apart, but I do remember that that little part on the shaft has to be there for the decocker to work properly.  It is the part that the spring fits under.

Thank you very much,

I am afraid it's not that. Everything sits in place and seems to work well. I am now desperately trying to change every part one by one. Disassemble, switch one CGW part for OEM and assemble again the whole gun. So far I tried the sear, disconnector, the roller bushing (three times since I have 3), the decocker itself and even all pins. I of course got some problems with the OEM disconnector, it messed up my SA function, but the hammer still fell all the way when I tried to decock it.
So what else is there? I can try to swap the trigger bar, but I only have another OEM one to try.
The fact is the pro grade kit was working without any problems in the p-07, but fails to decock in the p-09. There must be something...

Anyway, thank you for your time.

I am giving up.

I took literally every single part and tried it in the p09. Took all of it out, not only the pro grade kit, but all parts, leaving only the frame. I put it in the p 09 frame and got the same result. The pro grade kit works well in the p07, but fails to decock in the p09.
When I put all back in the p07 frame, it works well again.
The only remaining answer is the frame is slightly different.

Sounds like you have tried.  All I can offer is to remove the slide, observe how the decocker parts function in the P-07, then put them in the P-09 frame and observe again, perhaps you can determine what is different.  Sorry I haven't been of much help, but I don't remember seeing this problem here on the forum before, and I don't have access to my pistols right now.

I would call CGW and explain what is happening to them If anyone can point out the problem it would be them. They designed the parts and have a very good working knowledge of these pistols.

Thank you

I've just asked CGW. I hope they will find time to answer.

Joe L: Could you please explain this in detail?

"Check to see that the bushing on the left side decocker shaft moved out of position when you disassembled the parts."

I am not sure what part did you mean. The decocker shaft seems to be solid piece of metal, there is no movable part on it.

Thank you.

I still hope I find something I keep overlooking.

Take a look at this video.
https://youtu.be/CT0gMIQW-H8
There is a part on the decocker shaft that can move.  The part is the piece that the spring leg is placed under using the notched screwdriver in the video.  I think I moved it on the shaft once when I was pulling the decocker lever out from the frame.  That is when I noticed it was a separate part and not part of the shaft itself.  Check to see that this part is pushed to as far to the left as possible when viewing the frame from the rear, as if you were holding the pistol in a normal position.  If it has moved to the right any at all, I don't think the decocker will function properly and it will be difficult to get the spring leg installed.

Let me know if you need more clarification.

If you view your frame from the same angle as in the video above, check to see that the decocker bushing or cam (part that the spring leg is positioned under using the screwdriver) is flush to the right (in this view) with the decocker shaft shoulder.  If it has moved on the shaft to the left (in this view), it won't work correctly, from what I remember.

Thank you so much for the detailed description.

I have two decockers from p07 and p09 and they both look fine (they both decock normally with factory parts and both fail with CGW parts). I am no longer sure this is my mistake or some wear of parts, because now both p07 and p09 fail to decock with the CGW kit. They work fine with factory parts...

My last attempt was the CGW hammer (and the sear spring from the kit) alone with factory gun parts and it still failed to decock. When I put the factory hammer back it works perfect. So it looks like the hammer is the cause of the problem and if so, there is no way around it. I will give up the whole kit, do some polish and get some lighter springs. I will miss the crisp SA though :-)

Thank you again for your time and kindness.

I understand.  Perhaps CGW will return your call when they get back to the shop on Monday.  If I come up with any additional ideas, I'll get back to you.  I just hope you can get everything to work eventually!

Best regards,
Joe
