Back at the range after a long while
« on: June 10, 2021, 06:41:19 AM »
I hadn’t shot my VZ2008 for few months and went to the range today.  A few miscellaneous observations and insights, for whatever they’re worth:

I was using the CNC Warrior PKM Short flash hider.  I didn’t test the flash suppression in the dark, but it shot well, and took out the cheek slap of the Century slant brake.

The Czech bipod puts the POI about 5” higher than without.  This was at 50 yards.

With factory ladder sights I was getting 3” groups at 100 yards.  This was with a smoking hot barrel after about 100 rounds.

I was shooting Wolf FMJ out of mags that were loaded to 28 rounds back in May of 2016.  After 5 years the mags were fine, feed lips intact, and fed with no problem.  They were already pretty well-worn when I got them, at least cosmetically.

I revisited the Ramlite magnetic rail that fits over the dust cover.  I remember it worked well but it had been years.  It's mounted with a Primary Arms Microdot with a 2” dot.  It worked great.  The groups were 3-4” at 50 yards, which is not bad since my astigmatism turns the dot into a bunch of grapes.  They opened up to about 8” at 100 yards.  It held its zero perfectly, removed and replaced several times and tested on two separate dust covers.  An excellent solution to using a red dot and having back up irons in an instant if needed.  I’m really surprised this didn’t take off when it came out years ago.  Top quality and only about $60 from what I remember.  Highly recommend grabbing it up if you ever come across one.

When I first got the VZ2008 back in 2014, I was getting 1-2” groups consistently at 50 yards, and started out with 8-10” groups at 100 but have now gotten it down to less than half that.  This rifle has about 2000 rounds through it.  Since 2014, I’ve used nothing to clean the barrel but automatic transmission fluid and a boresnake.  Accuracy remains, barrel is still shiny, the lands sharp, and no corrosion.  I have foaming bore cleaner and Hoppes and a proper rod-and-jag cleaning kit, but I never seem to find time to do it and they've stayed on the shelf.  It’s starting to seem that all that’s not necessary, at least for these military-type firearms.

Fun time.  Nice rifle.

Thanks for the report!
I let my badge expire during the "lockdown" and need to renew it. I'm feeling inspired!
