Can you safely shoot .22 shorts in the CZ452-2E-ZKM-Special
« on: December 14, 2002, 09:10:29 PM »
Back some time ago,we used to shoot the 22 short, long and long rifle cartridges in practically all bolt action and single shot .22's.I referring to the 50's and 60's.

Does anyone know how the CZ Special will handle shorts?

To the best of my knowledge there should be no reason not to shoot shorts in your 452.  Just be aware that if you shoot a lot of shorts you will establish a burn ring in the chamber at the mouth of the case.  If you do not clean this ring out of your chamber you may have trouble when you try to chamber or extract a long rifle round.

Jumping the grooves(using a cartridge in a firearm which is intended to a longer one which in turn is closer to the lands & grooves) usualy is not a precision proposition(but not a dangerous one in this case) but when returning to the l.r. will screw-up on your accuracy due to burned chamber(estimated after 1000 shots or more). This is why chambering for such are indicated on firearm.

i've had a cz 452 lux for around 2 years now and would recommend shooting cci or remington shorts for small game hunting. they scare game less and are not so hard on your ears. as for accuracy i can make the same groups at 50 yrds. with cci s or federal gold match Lr. Czs are one of a few .22s left that will still fed shorts out of the mag without jamming.

If you're looking for quiet shooting, try the Aquila subsonic 22lr rounds.  Very quiet in my 452 and in my Biathlon Basic.  Regards,

Don't do it.
Basically if it doesn't say, short on the gun or says longrifle only...you have your answer.

You run the risk of the following:

When you fire the round, the case expands. A short round in a long rifle chamber will expand in the middle of the chamber, continued use will not just put a fouling ring but grind an indent in your chamber. This ring may cause trouble with extraction of cases that are longer than the "short round" you are firing, it may "cant" your cartridge in the chamber and decrease accuracy over the life of the gun.

The jump from the chamber to the rifiling will decrease accuracy (despite claims to the contrary) as well will increase leading and impact wear to the throat of the rifiling. This will inturn decrease your accuracy potential when going back to the regular ammo.

I have tried CB longs, whos case is the length of the long rifle round and they work OK but they are not accurate enough for me.
If you really want quiet and live in a state that allows it, get a suppressor...more fun with a CZ can not be had.
