So, I see Berry's Hybrid HP at MidwayUSA...
« on: August 18, 2021, 01:19:04 AM »
Has anyone tried it? It looks good, like a Gold Dot, (which I think it was modeled after), and would be used to load SD and training ammo. Anyone tried it, had any good luck?

Are these different than the JHP Berry’s have offered the past couple years?  I’ve loaded the 200g version since 2-2017.  They shoot the same as other Berry’s I load.  As for “good luck”, any time I hit the bull it’s good luck.

Those are plated JHP and the plating is thin. I think the recommended max velocity is 1250 FPS iirc. I’d tried them for practice and they’re okay but won’t trust them as SD ammo.

For $0.16/pc, I’d rather use Precision Delta 124 Gr JHP ($0.109/pc) and RMR Reloading 124 JHP MPR ($0.11/pc). They’re way better than any of those plated bullets from berry’s and cheaper too. You also get free shipping from Precision Delta and RMR.

Those are the plated HP that Berry first introduced about 4 years ago to compete with the Speer Gold Dots. Berry calls them the Hybrid Hollow Point, and they took about 2 years to develop. They are not jacketed, they are thick plated. They should also not be confused with their run-of-the-mill Target Hollow Point offering, which has a thin plating.

The big advantage is that Speer sells the Gold Dot in 100 packs, while Berry sells theirs in 100, 250 & 1000 packs so the price ends up being hugely favorable toward Berry.

I have loaded these over N340 and BE-86. Berry recommends a specific velocity (1050 to 1150fps), so if you want to load these yourself you'll need a chrono. The 124gr works very well in the CZ barrel, although I have not tried the 147gr. In my testing, the 124's were very accurate. I load them for use on animals because my wife and I walk trails and back roads every day and our county has issues with rabid fox.

These have been as rare as unicorns for about 2 years, I'm glad to see them coming back.

Have used these in the past in 40 cal.  Got very inconsistent results on Extreme Spread.  When I checked the dia. of the bullets I got everything from .399 to .404. Wound up using them for short range matches and have not repurchased. Never got the accuracy I was looking for.

Your mileage may be different.

Yes, I should have been specific - the THP from Berry's was a real pain in the tookas for me, had t load so short as to be unreal, just to function in my CZs. They even caused the Scorpion to choke occasionally. Thanks for the info, Wobbly, I think I might try these if they don't sell out before payday. :D

I've previously rated the Berry Target HP as their worst bullet product. They were the least accurate by test, and some feed ramps absolutely do not like them. They would feed in my CZ P01 without fail, but my Kimber would stove pipe on every 3rd or 4th round.

I did hear at a few other places that the bullet doesn't have a real good track record for expansion, so I will probably stick with my tried and true 124gr XTPs.

Interesting to see I was not the only one with issues.  I also had to shorten the OAL by 0.01 in, which is quite a lot.  Also had to drop the powder charge by 0.4 gr, to approximate velocity I had been getting with Bayou Bullets of the same weight.  All around just not a good product, in my estimation not worth the money and time.  If I want lead bullets I buy coated TB bullets, if I want a HP for hunting or defense; XTPs, Gold Dots, and Nosler work just fine and are worth the extra cost.
