Hello,

I am considering a full-size CZ and have narrowed it to a 75BD or an SP-01 [safety- not decocker]. Since I live in California, I cannot get the SP-01 Tactical/decocker version, but that would be my true preference.

I haven't found any of these at the same shop to do a head to head comparison, which would resolve some of my questions.

#1- Does the SP-01 have a little less metal in the web of hand area, behind top of grips?
  • In looking closely at pictures online, I saw that the 75B and 75BD had a flat part of frame behind top of grip, and then the metal began to curve back/around in that area.
  • The same spot on an SP-01 seemed to skip that flat section and proceed directly to curving the frame around.
  • IF they are the same grips, then it looks like a frame difference.
  • If they are different grips, then all bets are off.
  • BTW- I care as I have shortish fingers, and have trouble with the DA trigger pull on the safety versions of CZ75 handguns.
  • If this area is even just more rounded, it will feel like a smidge shorter of a DA reach than the 75B design.
#2- Is there any inherent differences in the design [other than extra weight at muzzle for stability] that causes one to be more accurate than the other?

Is there anything else you think I should know in making my decision? [for example, they DO both use the same grips, right? What about the same sights?]

My only CZ for comparison is a PCR that I just got, and just 'Cajunized' with their Pro/Duty kit [with reach reduction trigger].

The SP01 has an upswept beaver tail.  The 75BD doesn't.  That is a major frame difference between these models.  I'm not sure that reduces the trigger reach though and you'd be wise to get the CGW reach reduction if you have small hands.  There are also other things you can do to like a frame reduction where you remove material under the trigger guard to allow for a more comfortable high hold.  Same can be done under the beaver tail as well.  These all reduce the reach to the trigger as well as improve feel.

The grips roughly the same geometry and are interchangeable between these models.  The SP01 comes with rubber grips, I'm not certain but I think the 75BD comes with plastic grips.

The actions are nearly identical with one being a decocker and the other a safety model.  One benefit for an SP01 is it has a thicker barrel (I refrain from calling it a bull barrel).  The 9mm variant shares the same barrel bushing as the 40S&W variant on the SP01.  I don't believe the 75BD has this thicker barrel.  It's debatable if that offers any improvement on accuracy.

I think the sights are the same between the safety SP01 and the 75BD.  The SP01 tactical variant comes with a night sights.  These once again can be changed out as needed depending on usage.  Most competition shooters prefer a fiber optic front and blacked out rear.

You should really keep it to one thread.

Cheers,
Toby

Hey,
I just joined the forum. I have a SP-01 and one thing you can do is change the grips to the flat metal ones. it makes a pretty big difference in my opinion. My grip is noticeably closer. They are kind of pricey. I purchased mine on sale from Cajun Gun Works. Didn't initially like the silver/grey color but the price made up for it. As far as modifying or removing material I would suggest looking up Moisinvirus on Youtube just to see what can be done. He changed a Beretta 92FS grip to a Vertec and re-checkered the backstrap with hand tools on what looks to be his dining room table!

Second that ,covers about everything. I would grip each one and choose the one that fits you best.

Thanks all! Just closing the loop- I got an SP-01, but am not sure if it was the right thing yet. I am waiting an extra wide CZ Customs left side safety. If this doesn't make it feel 'right', then- I'll chalk it up to learning, and sell it to fund a 75 B-Decocker.

I really like the potential of the SP-01 [and, if I lived in another state, would have bought the decocker version], but even the wider ambi SP-01 safety doesn't let me sweep the safety off with my thumb when holding one-handed [unless I shift grips twice].

Please don't respond to this thread. I will be opening another on for insight into safeties, but will do it in a different section of the forum.
