Easing into loading .308 Win….dies?
« on: March 03, 2022, 09:48:59 PM »
Hi guys. I know this is not really a CZ topic. But I trust this forum above all others. I’m easing into loading 308 very slowly.

What are premium dies that would serve me well for this? I’ll be starting this on a 550b.   For now I will only be doing full length resizing, ad I’m not competing…..not yet at least.

Thank you

C

I had been using Dillon and Redding carbide dies without any problems loading them on my 550b.

I'm partial to the Redding Type S full length bushing sizing die and Forster ultramicrometer seating die.  I've actually removed the expander ball and now use a PMA expander mandrel die to expand the mouth.  I load most of my rifle on my CoAx.  I guess you could treat your 550 as a single stage as well if desired.

These are overkill for a plinking gun but will serve you well if you ever wanted to load for precision competition.

Cheers,
Toby

Why couldn't it be CZ related  - there are several 308 CZ rifles out there.  ;) I use the RCBS 2 die set and it is working quite well in my old RVBS RS single stage  8)

Buy yourself a set of quality dies- Redding competition set, Forster Benchrest set etc. As was said before, pull out the expander ball out of FL die and expand the neck with a mandrel (Wilson, 21st Century, you name it). It's enough for PRS purposes or even F-class.

Thank you everyone.

I’m embarrassed to admit I did not know about Cz in 308…..I just looked it up!

If you're loading for one specific rifle, I recommend a neck sizing die in addition to full length.  It's easier on your brass imo.  I've had great luck with mine.  I neck size a few times before running the fl.  I keep a set of lapua brass that's mated to my rem 700's chamber.  Just size the necks,  trim every few loadings and good to go.

I've read the arguments that prefer fl all the time too.  I just settled on this way. Slightly tighter chamber fit when closing the bolt on a round when you neck size only.  Subconsciously the tighter fit makes me feel like it's more accurate.

Nothing too fancy here.  I use rcbs dies in a 1970s rock chucker.

If it means anything to you, for rifle, I use Redding dies on a Forster Co-ax.  Redding, Redding, Redding.  You can easily justify cheaper dies for pistol, but if you are in any way focused on long-range precision, there is no reason NOT to use Redding dies.
