???s on CZ 527 Varmint
« on: August 25, 2008, 10:44:53 PM »
Hi all,

I'm new to this forum but VERY glad I found it! I'm planning to buy 2 new rifles in the next few months. One a 550 FS, the other possibly a 527 varmint.

I'm hoping to get some information here on the 527 Varmint.

I'm looking to buy a "starter" dedicated varmint (though it will also probably also initially serve double duty as a coyote gun)  rifle in .223. I've been looking at the Savage (and its alphabet soup of varmint models). In researching this choice on another board the 527 Varmint was suggested. This suits me well as I'm inclined to like CZ rifles.

However...I was warned that..."There are some issues with the CZ. The receiver can't take standard weaver style rings and the ones from CZ are...well, limited. When you set up a rifle for long range prairie dog shooting you want all the elevation you can get and that means you set up the scope so that the 100 yard zero is at the bottom of the elevation turret's travel. You can't do that with a CZ."....

I respect this persons opinion, and in doing some research here it DOES seem that there are some who feel that the CZ scope mounting setup leaves something to be desired.

Can anyone here give me some thoughts on how to deal with this issue. Is there TRULY no way to put Weaver style rings on the 527 Varmint? Does it really matter? Hope you all don't mind what may seem a dumb question. My enthusiasm is greater than my knowledge.

Thanks to all for your thoughts.

I just purchased the 527 .223 Varmint walnut stock.  There are no iron sights only dovetails for mounts which are 16mm.  The factory scope rings you can purchase for this are medium (which turns out to be everyone else's high), and happens to be the highest ones you can get from CZ. I must say they are top notch steel rings, well worth the 55 USD charged.  BUT they will not allow you to mount most (all?) 50 mm lens scopes as the scope won't clear the barrel.  I don't see any  other problems.

Needless to say I looked all over for ones to mount the scope that came off my AR-15 a Bushnell Banner 6x18 - 50mm scope but ended up with a Simmons, same thing but only 40mm.   I love the rifle, I thought it would be to heavy because of the larger diameter barrel but it is very well balanced to carry around.  Much lighter than my Bushmaster, (new scope is lighter also).

I am surprised at the number of readers on here, but no one seems to answer posts??  For such a great rifle to have so little interest generated is a shame.  Hope this helps... I will try to help whenever I can.

I think many are still making their way here from the old site we moved from on 7/13.

I have a  CZ 527 .223 Cal. Varmint Kevlar Rifle with a Weaver 6-20x40mm AO Grand Slam Riflescope w/ Butler Creek FO Covers mounted on the 16mm receiver dovetail with CZ rings, which I'm happy with. A 50mm might fit, but it would be very close and you wouldn't be able to use the covers. Dependent upon the size of the occular bolt clearance/operation might be hampered.

When I was researching rings for this rifle I put together some information here which you might find helpful.

I went with the 527 in the American .223 design rather than the Varmint. I feel it's easier to haul around in the field and is very accurate. I settled on a Weaver  40mm AO with medium rings as well. Clearance with a 50mm AO would be really tight. Should make for a great coyote rifle. Enjoy. I sure have.
