Curious about new cartridges, military?
« on: April 21, 2022, 05:45:47 PM »
Hello, Been looking up some information on the new 6.8 by sig whole military contract and such.  I think the 6.8 x 51 is an ok idea DMR or squad automatic round. I dont think its ideal for 556 ar replacement at this time... Thoughts, opinions?

Tim at MAC just did a video on this about the 6.8 or the 6ARC taking over 223.
my opinion... once I saw the 6ARC just uses the 243 bullets that are plentiful everywhere and can fit in an AR platform I built one.
Then I shot it to 1k, Then I sold all my 223 brass/bullets/dies.
I won't waste small rifle primers on any other cartridge currently.

I normally keep the scope zeroed at 600yds.
I haven't loaded for the 6.8 but I bet it will be much the same. I think hornady's marketing machine will push the 6ARC farther, hence the components so I went with them.

Supposedly has a chamber pressure in the neighborhood of 88,000psi with a recoil impulse a little less than .308. Will it eat barrels?

8.5# weapon-empty. Add a whizzbang, laser rangefinding,auto-adjustable scope (2#?), plus a full mag, flashlight, offset optic and suppressor, this beast will be topping out around 12-13 pounds. Add a DBAL and a bipod…a “smaller statured” soldier or Marine is going to struggle on top of already bloated combat load out.
Specs aren’t completely out yet but that new Vortex optic looks heavy.

The armor penetration is a bit suspect. Level 3 yes but at what range? I’ve verified that some Level IV plates will stop .338 Lapua RUAG AP rounds at 25 meters. “Stop” is relative. The soft armor under the plate started to smolder and a live person’s innards would probably become raspberry jam. The .227 is of course faster, so we’ll see.

Curious to see what finally comes of it.

.22-250's and .25-06's and .220 Swifts eat up the barrels and they don't run near the pressure, near the heat.

And they ain't full auto or even semi-auto.  No comparison between a varmint rifle getting shot a few times an outing and going through multiple 20/25 round magazines in few seconds per magazine.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?
