Author Topic: Why polymer??? I suppose you could say it’s a weight savings. Really or is it just cost?  (Read 3530 times)

I really do not see polymer frame flex decreasing precision. I would look at the P09 as an example and it is very accurate. I think the results that Joe L had backs that up.

If possible degradation of the polymer over years or use, or frame flex actually causing any issues with accuracy or precision was a problem, HK would have never gone all polymer in all of their pistols since the P7. I mean, it's not like the Mark23 or USPs aren't the most torture tested pistols in modern history or anything.

Polymer frame flexing has little to do with pistol precision as the latter is defined in particular by the play between the barrel and the slide. Of course a good fit between slide and molded in slide rails of the frame is important. Looking to slow motion images of rifles being fired also reveals significant (steel) barrel flexing. Hence no big deal.

One final note for the Glock aficionados: lots of people believe the Glock pioneered the polymer frame, which isn't true. Heckler & Koch designed and produced their VP70 pistol long before Glock did...

I dunno about how much the frame flex helps, having carried Glocks during my career as an armed social worker, I am just now getting into metal/steel frames again.  The weight difference to me is a non-issue, YMMV.

My favorite thing about polymer frames are all the purdy colors.   ;D
I just got a purple framed Sar B6c and love it.
I do loathe the black lame arse powder finish on the slide and internals on the Sar and so many others.   :-\

My hypothesis is that polymer frame flex hurts more than it helps by degrading precision.

I agree that weight is not an issue with a proper gun belt and a holster that hugs your body.  But, LEOs and soldiers tote far more EDC gear than I do, so maybe a lighter weight frame makes sense for them.

An affinity for purdy colors is why God invented Krylon:

Krylon?  That stuff ain't durable.
When my double-wide caught fire, last Thanksgiving deep frying that Turducken, the Krylon burnt right off.   O0
I like my polymer color impregnated, but not my women.   O0

My compact stainless steel 4516-1
S&W 45acp has less recoil and muzzle flip than my P-09 and P-07. Don't get me wrong I really like the cz's but I carry the Smith & Wesson. A good gun belt and a good leather holster and and I can carry it all day and sometimes forget I have it on.
The only c z I would consider purchasing at this point would be a 97bd. I know I got to hurry up they're going to disappear quick.
