Ok here is my question I'm looking at possibly switching to open but I would like to do more than just throw  frame mounted dot on the gun then go and compete against guys running comps and breaks. Is there any gunsmiths out there that can maybe port the factory barrel and slide or something else to mitigate recoil of the 40 major. If I'm wasting my time and should just sell it and cut my loses and get a 2011 or a Checkmate and move to 9mm major then just tell me that. My thinking is having an upper done so that I can switch between limited and open by just switching barrel and slide and being able to keep my major power factor which if I'm correct 9mm major doesn't cut it in limited. Thanks for the insight and I have already emailed Cajun just waiting to here back.

You are correct that 9 major is not allowed in limited in USPSA.

the problem with .40 in open is the lower mag capacity, if you want to switch between open and limited why not keep the .40 and look for a used open gun.  Occasionally I see someone trying open and not licking it so the possibility of a "bargain"...it's hard to use bargain and open in the same sentence...LOL
If I had known how much better being retired is than working I would have done it FIRST.

Well I think I settled on just buying a new Checkmate. I really didn't want to load 9 major but I will if that means I'll have a slight competitive edge over the 40 without a comp. So there goes a down payment on my oldest kids college tuition. Lol just kidding but was also looking at 2011 variants but feel CZ for me is the best because I can work on these things blind folded and they have not failed me yet. Thanks again

Dang dude, you are in the right spot, There is also an option to use a TS frame with an SP-01 parts to build a comped open gun but I think its' mostly for 9.
Having your experience with reloading, why are you not wanting to load 9Maj? is it the pressures or something else?
Do you guys ever consider using the shock cases for 9MAJ? You seem to have a lot of insight on these 2 topics so interested in your thoughts.

We'll to be honest I guess I'm gonna go ahead and do 9mm major most of my 9mm components are for heavy slow bullets and for major I believe the ticket is 124 where as my Shadow 2 Orange I run 165 and occasionally 147 for carry Optics. So no big deal just fear the unknown because haven't done much major loading but I guess I'm going to now. I have looked into the shock cases but never used them might have to re visit that idea. Just got my Sig Romeo XL in today so have to order a Tso mount and just run the Tso in open like that untill the checkmate is here and ready. Usually anytime I get a CZ it will take about a month before I ever shoot it because I strip it down and polish the crap out of it then start replacing parts. Not sure how much I need to replace on the checkmate and want know till it gets here. Thanks again for the replies.

Now for the elusive.....Which powder, primers or projectiles.  9mm Major is no joke.
Shooting open is addictive and one open pistol is never enough.

yeah, that stuff should go in the reloading section.
They wont let you post those recipes here though. Or they didn't like me discussing it back a few years ago when I was building to open major. Understand why.
If you need load data/notes I have some through notes in a file somewhere...
I would say use 124s with HS6 or SWMP. The trick is to find a bullet with the right nose profile that will let you seat the bullet long enough to pack enough powder in to make the boom fast enough WITHOUT jamming the lands. The powder need to be a slow powder so that some if it burns in the comp.
I do miss it though, when that gun runs its like shooting a 357 automag with 25 bullets and the muzzle flip of a .22
pics when it happens please?

I'd imaging the Checkmate is just like the TSO in that it doesn't need much out of the box.  It will have the same action as the TSO and since it is SAO you shouldn't need to do much.  Just change the Ergo's to fit your hand and roll.

I actually run a heavier main spring in my TSO to help increase the trigger pull.  I've wondered if my TSO would ignite small rifle magnum primers (my most prolific SRP)?  I bet it would no problem.  That may be a good thing to think about as you develop a major load.  Not sure what stock of components you have on hand but the thicker cup of a small rifle primer may be useful in major?

You need a slow powder (autocomp, N350, 3n37, 3n38, etc...).  While I currently don't load major, I use 3n37 for my SD loads with 124 gr JHP.  I'm pushing those about 1250-1300 fps.  I didn't need to push it any further with that specific bullet.

Cheers,
Toby

Dang! I have a LOT of 3N38 that I bought specifically for 45. I had no idea it would be good in 9maj. will keep that in mind. why I dig this forum.
