Does this Browning Hi-Power have unusual roll marks?
« on: November 14, 2022, 05:45:13 PM »
I'm looking at a Browning Hi-Power made in 1988.  It has the polished blue finish and target sights. The right side of the slide is only marked Made in Belgium (no assembled in Portugal mark). The left side is roll marked Browning Arms Company Morgan Utah & Montreal P.Q.

Is this very unusual for this model in the US since all the others I have seen that are stamped Browning Arms say assembled in Portugal? It is my understanding that the stamped Portugal models were for the US market only.

IIRC, the "assembled in Portugal" didn't begin until the 80s. Not sure what year.
It's not saving any water if you have to flush it over and over....

Looks like my BHP from the late 70's.

My 1982 HP has the same as yours on the left side. On the right side, under 'Made in Belgium' it says 'by Fabrique Nationale Herstal'

A cut and paste from another forum:

ALL FN/Browning Hi Powers are made in Belgium. However, FN moved its Hi Power assembly to Viana, Portugal in 1980 to take advantage of a new facility and lower labor costs.
So, it you have a Hi Power made later than that it was still made in Belgium, but it was "Assembled in Portugal".

Many others have posted similar opinions, and that's why I think this 1988 Browning stamped Hi-Power is unusual since it is missing the Portugal mark. After researching more, this particular 1988 Hi-Power was probably not made for the US market, and at that time, the Portugal mark was not required. The manufacturer thought it was a US import requirement after 1980.

Thanks, all the FN stamped Hi-Powers did not have/require the Portugal mark, only the Browning Arms ones without the FN mark.
