Old barrel hitting Conefit causing slide to hang
« on: January 05, 2023, 03:49:17 PM »
I have an '84 Springfield P9 that I had a gunsmith update to use a Conefit GR.
I was shooting with a compact slide/barrel for a while just fine, but yesterday I decided to switch to a long slide for a change of pace.
After assembling the gun I encountered serious resistance to the slide moving back just at the point where the lugs have disengaged.

Turns out the outer edge of the conefit GR was hitting the underside of the barrel just forward of the chamber. See the two photos in the link below that compare the functioning barrel (rear) with the one getting stuck, and you can see the differences in the barrel profiles that caused the jam. After I ground down the offending material so that the barrel profiles matched, the gun cycled as it should.

I can't tell you the origin of the barrel (it's close to 20 years old) so this may not be an issue with newer ones, but thought I would share for any other owners of vintage CZ clones.
