Scorpion 3+ Pistol barrel nut size?
« on: July 02, 2023, 08:44:14 AM »
…because it would be entirely TOO EASY and MAKE TOO MUCH SENSE to use the same barrel nut as the EVO 3…so that means I’d have to spend another $50 and more wasted time waiting on another barrel wrench from HBI to get the bleep thing off…all this to put a second-hand 16” bbl. and a butt stock on the 3+ and make it all aft compliant until such time as SCOTUS slaps the Biden DOJ off their collective barstool over this pistol brace bs…but I digress…

Aw to hell with it, I’ll just cut the 3+ Handguard off with a hacksaw (like I did with my klunky Evo 3 oem forend) and salvage the $$$ MI Handguard off my EVO 3 and put it on the 3+, which is vastly superior to the oem CZ junk furniture anyway.

I swear, I would have come out ahead if I’d just bought a B&T APC or an actual HK MP5 for $2500+ from the get go rather than have to waste all this time, money and aggravation fixing the numerous niggles of the Laugo / CZ Scorpion.

The 3 plus handguard nut attaches to the barrel extension/trunion. Can't really make it the same diameter as the old evo3 nuts. Should be a 1 1/8 socket though if I remember.

Yeah, really “barrel nut” is a misnomer. It’s just there to keep the hand guard on rather than secure the barrel to the receiver, though you could yank the barrel out and destroy the plastic receiver if you overtorqued it for some silly reason. Thing is, nobody needs a 1 1/8” handguard nut. The original HBI Evo 3 “barrel nut” wrench (for a @ 7/8” / 21mm nut??) fits just fine over and all the way down the 3+ pistol barrel with plenty of room to spare, but unfortunately cannot engage the 1 1/8” nut. You gotta spend another $50 for the special 3+ “barrel nut” wrench to get that sucker off.

Just another factory niggle to make the various Scorpions a bigger PITA to own and modify.

Pretty sure there are deep well 1 1/8 sockets. Believe its a standard size for a decent amount agricultural equipment

Well, you’re not gonna find one of those at your local Ace Hardware, so it’s gonna be a PITA to hunt one down that’s long enough and wide enough on the inside to accommodate the barrel.

Just be aware that the $50 (with shipping) barrel nut wrench that you invested in for the Evo 3 ain’t gonna work on the 3+.

It would be nice if someone made one of these, an oversized version of the type of combo spark plug and axel nut wrench that used to come in motorcycle tool kits years ago, but with a 21mm and whatever the 3+ takes on either end, but not yet:

ETA: actually, the good folks at Ascalon Arms pointed me in the right direction — an extended 1 1/8” spark plug spanner — available on the interwebs, if not necessarily at your local Harbor Freight:

https://www.amazon.com/Melco-Ta21-Box-Spanner-1-1/dp/B0001P0E7S?th=1

Also, I forgot I had to track down a pin wrench to get that useless “faux suppressor” off the 3+ pistol barrel in the first place. Another “one time use” addition to the old tool box…

The more you know…
