One gun emits sparks, one doesn’t. Same ammo
« on: June 25, 2023, 12:12:27 PM »
Hi all,

Bit of a weird question. Took both my compacts to the range yesterday. The P01 shot both ammos I had completely normal but the Compact emitted sparks on both types. Lots of powder coming out. I went back and forth between guns and it kept happening only on the Compact. The Compact is a bit old (20 years+) and may need some refreshment parts due soon but what would make it not ignite all the powder vs the P01?

I have been doing some testing with several powders and have been using some Russian, rifle, and CCI pistol primers and comparing them with these powders.  One combo pelted my face with what I think is powder.  The combo is Unique powder and Russian primers.  Those primers are weaker than the others and the Unique powder is slow burning and I was using a 13# recoil spring in my CZ75 P01 omega.  When I put the factory spring it in most of the powder splatter stopped.  Try swapping the recoils springs in you guns and see what happens.  You may have a weak recoil spring.  See if the problem moves with the spring.  I get no splatter using the CCI primers and the rifle primers or switching to Bullseye powder which is faster.

Thanks for the heads up.  That's good know.  No wonder there are recoil springs tuning pack for situations likes these.

Don't see how a recoil guide rod spring weight would effect the powder burning rate of a bullet? The primer either ignites or it doesn't.

Update, put a new recoil spring in and no more sparks. The accuracy however seems to be off par compared to other compacts though. I switched the slide onto a P01 frame and didn’t improve. Something worn in the slide assembly is making shots go off

Spit balling here, but wouldn't a stronger spring increase the burn time for powder in the barrel and also limit the amount of oxygen entering the barrel from the chamber?

I don't think so. But I am no expert. Don't see how a recoil guide rod spring weight would effect the powder burning rate of a bullet? The primer either ignites or it doesn't.

Because you don't handload so you simply don't understand different powder burn rates or how they affect the round, the gun or how the gun could have an effect on the round in question. Read up on handloading and different powders and you'll get a clearer picture of what goes on in a cartridge.
