90 gr bullets in 9 mm
« on: June 17, 2023, 01:48:18 PM »
Anyone have experience shooting 90 gr bullets in 9 mm?

I am curious because I see a fair amount of premium bullets offered, and a fair amount of marketed self defense ammo using these, but don’t see much offered by the usual bulk bullet vendors (Berrys, PD, RMR).

I've loaded 88 grain Speer and 90 grain Sierra JHP Bullets in 9x19mm Luger cases to some 1450 fps with no problems, using Alliant Red Dot Powder.  :)
I have also loaded the 100 grain Speer JHP to some 1350 fps, also using Alliant Red Dot Powder.

Note: Velocities chronographed eight feet from the muzzle of a Cz75 SP01 and Taurus PT92.

The Terminal effects on the larger small game, namely larger Raccoons and Ground Hogs, has been impressive.
Accuracy has also been excellent, out to 100 yards.

Interesting. thank you. I might get some of this ammo more for curiosity.

Is there an app/bot for finding reloading supplies specifically 90 grain bullets?

Ha! Found it. Looks like all the bullets for reloading are premium type….

I think it's a fad/niche thing really. You'll always see these minor brand vendors touting the higher velocity they achieve with light-weight bullets, but never accuracy or effectiveness. It's sort of like minor loads with 147gr; possibly useful in their place, but no one walks the street with them.

Bum a handful of bullets from a pal who loads for 380Auto and make some for yourself.

Yes I load them, and for subcompacts I absolutely love em. Trick is you gotta load em hotter than bleep.

One of my go-to loads for a while has been Sierra 90gr JHP over 7.2gr Vihta 3N37, which is just over 1500fps from a 5” barrel. Boy they’re fun!

I pig hunt 2-3 times a year. For the last 10 years or so my sidearm is a CZ compact (my EDC) with Liberty Civil Defense 50 grain copper bullets.

Below are pics of wounded hogs that were finished with this combo. the spine shot was at 20 yards, I aimed at the head and he sat up right as I shot. The leg  shot was on a moving animal and the neck shot is entrance only.

On the spine shot we were riding around and did not expect to see hogs but we did and the only one with a rifle only had 3 rounds.

Brain shots are instantly fatal. Shots to the back of the head blows brains out the nose (hogs and cows).

I know some folks consider these a gimmick but i do not. They are the only pistol rounds I will carry.

I loaded up 88 grain hollow points into 9x19mm.  Only because I got them cheap in a yard sale. I don't shoot or load 380 auto. They worked great In my CZ75.  No cycling or accuracy issues.
