One thing I've noticed is that a lot of paramedics in these type of threads (on other forums) tend to downplay tourniquets. It's usually something along the lines of "only used one once in 15 years," or something similar. It was pointed out that if the paramedics arrive in 7-10 minutes, and the victim bleeds out in 3-5 minutes, he or she is clearly past the point of needing a tourniquet, which is why so few get used by paramedics. Well, that, and that they are likely to just directly clamp the artery shut.

As polecat said, it would be challenging to get a tourniquet on oneself before passing out from blood loss. Given that the alternative is either direct pressure or spending a few moments to get right with God before expiring, I'd rather go out doing my bleepedest to stay among the living, or at least have the tools on hand to help others. I don't rate my chances of ever being able to use a tourniquet on myself very highly, especially if I'm injured enough to need one, but it will be there should the need arise. Most folks that carry guns for self defense will never need them either, but when you need one, you need it immediately, not a week later.

I have a kit in the car and 1 on my 2 range belts. I keep the torniquet separate from the main kit to free up space in the bag and on my gun belt I have the torniquet on the belt forward of the holster and upside down. After watching some video of bleed situations and seeing statistics, if you hit/injure a major artery and are spurting blood, you have about 18 to 23 seconds to apply before losing consciousness and bleeding out, so I like to keep it close to my hands. So why upside down? Gravity. If your arm is injured and or you have kit or a jacket or clothing that might be in the way of drawing the torniquet drawing downward to deploy is a bit easier. Most of my range time I am probably there by myself and in a rural area. Help could be 30 mnz away.

Lets forget about accidental gun injuries for a moment. I have a friend who is into drones and rc airplanes. If you are not aware, the motors on those craft have the ability to travel at speeds exceeding 120mph. So the motors are powerful. One day this past summer, friend went to the local park to do some flying and he took one of his 80 y/o friends with him. Mr 80 yo was just standing there watching minding his own business and another 3rd party was there with his rc airplane. 3rd party guy inadvertantly gunned the engine on his rc and left it on full throttle, the plane was immediately out of control and smashed into Mr 80 yo lower leg. Dropped him like a bag of dirt, BORE A HOLE INTO HIS SHIN ABOUT 1/2 INCH DEEP, HIT AN ARTERY AND HE WAS SPURTING BLOOD. Friend, who shoots with me, grabbed his trauma kit from the car and applied gauze pressure and torniquet to control bleeding. Ambulance called. Transported. it was 30 minutes getting there.
