P-09 in .40 S&W - preferred gen model?
« on: May 03, 2024, 08:36:11 AM »
I am a long time lurker and first time poster.

I am more of a rifle and shotgun shooter, but I do do some revolver and semi-auto shooting a few times a year, meaning I have some experience but am far from an expert with handguns.  I have a few P-07s in 9mm in my collection and really like them.  I have shot a lot of different pistols, and I think the P-07 is the best personal defense pistol currently available for my use.

I am now looking for a .40 S&W pistol.  This will be for carry in the woods for use against both two-legged and four-legged varmints.  Naturally, my first choice is a CZ SA/DA model, and I am thinking that the P-9 looks like a good option.  It seems like the P-09 is easier to find in .40 S&W vs the P-07, and I like the idea of a slightly bigger gun for the slightly hotter cartridge over the 9mm.  I know the P-09 in .40 S&W was discontinued in 2018, but I am happy buying used.

My question is: is there a preferred gen model or year of manufacture for the P-09 in .40 S&W?

Thanks.

I think you'll like a P09 in .40 S&W when you find one.

The P09 didn't have two models like the P07 did (P07 DUTY - 1st gen, then P07 - 2nd gen) that I know of.

The only thing I can think of that changed during the P09 manufacture was the shape of the trigger.  The later ones got a slightly different shape.  You may be able to go to the CZ USA web site and look at triggers and see both versions.  But the older ones may not be for sale any longer.

I will say the trigger in the first few years of P09 manufacture didn't work for me in my P09 .40.  It would really hurt my trigger finger after a couple magazines of hot hollow point rounds.  I replaced it with a P07 DUTY trigger (more rounded/curved similar to the CZ75 pistols) and that took care of my trigger finger issue.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

For a defense gun I'd stay away from cz. If you read the various posts on here, you will see many of the long time members, aren't to happy with CZ after buying out Colt. Parts are hard to get and customer service is not all that great. According to some here the parts dept is ran by just one person.

I just recently sold a few of my CZs and replaced them with HKs

That's a little harsh.  I'm thinking CZ-USA will get everything straightened out before too long.

I'm a long ime member and CZ owner, and I'm not going anywhere.

I carry one of my CZ guns almost every day. I do so with confidence they will work god forbid the need would arise. Each has worked perfectly. Granted a used 75B .40 I bought required the extractor spring replaced and a bit of change to the hook, but 600 rounds since then, perfect. Each of the others have been great since day one.

CZ is not the issue in my estimation. Dolts at Colt are. Perhaps CZ is giving them way too much rope. As Joe stated, I'm sure CZ management will correct the course. Good to hear you kept some of your CZ's. 😁👍

Went to the CZ USA web store and looked them up for you.

Click on the link and it'll show you

The P07 DUTY trigger

The trigger that came out on the P09 and the non DUTY P07 when the P07 DUTY was replaced by it

What they call the second generation P07/P09 trigger

M1A4ME - Thanks so much for finding and posting those photos.  So it is the second gen trigger that you didn't like, and you were able to swap in a first gen trigger from a P-07?  Was it an easy swap?

Shinbone--Here is a YouTube playlist of videos that I shot several years ago on how to assemble/disassemble the P-09/07 series handguns.

Yes, I bought the P07 DUTY version rounded trigger for my .40 P09.  My reason was the P07 kicks much more with my reloads than the P09 but it was the P09 trigger that was hurting my trigger finger.

The P07 DUTY trigger is slightly longer than the later triggers and near the end of the trigger pull the bottom tip would hang/drag on the inside of the trigger guard.  I used my pocket knife to scrape a small amount of plastic off the inside of the trigger guard at the point of contact (didn't take much at all) and took care of that rubbing/hanging problem.  Still working today, almost 10 years later.

I left the later trigger in my 9MM P09 as the recoil is so soft in that pistol you hardly know you're firing it compared to the .40's, .357 SIG, etc.  Never any issue with the 9MM guns.

Thanks for all the great information, everyone, including the videos and trigger photos.  It is all very informative.

I should mention that I am super happy with my P-07.  It has been 100% reliable, is very accurate, shoots real easy, and the SA/DA action is my personal favorite for self defense.  But I am preaching the choir, here, I know.  Based on how well the P-07 has worked for me, I am really looking forward to a P-09 when I finally get one.  A P-07 in 9mm and a P-09 in .40 S&W seems like a perfect combination.  Maybe I'll like the P-09 so much, I'll get one in 9mm to become my new "nightstand" gun.

My current nightstand gun.

I started with a P09, shot it competitively one IDPA season- it did very well.  It’s my bedside gun.  I recently acquired a P07 and like you like it very much.  I need more trigger time with it, but anticipate it will become my primary carry gun.

Both my P09 & new P07 are i9mm

I've got two P-09's and one P-07.  I also have P-10F, C, and S models.  I just like the way the 4" barrel guns handle so my carry pistol is a P-07.  I put a red dot sight on it for a few weeks one time several years ago and shot it in a local bullseye match instead of a shooting a more traditional full size pistol.  I won that (small, local!) match, shooting a 75 Kadet in the rimfire portion.
