Well if he is an intelligent person he should be a changed man.  He should be super safety after that.  I started reloading 20 years ago and did not know anyone that reloaded.  My wife got me a Lee anniversary kit for Christmas and started on my own.  His ABC's of Reloading is a very good book for starters.  He emphasizes safety throughout of the book.  I later added two more Lee cheap presses so that I wouldn't have to keep changing the dies.  I just had to move the brass to the next press.  I had them set up side by side on my bench.  Then I tried a Lee progressive.  I had it 3 days and never could get it to run right.  I sent it back and got a Lee Classic Turret.  That's what I still use today.  I have a setup for each caliber and just have to swap out the turret and start loading.  I added a light on the turret so I could see the powder.  I got a Dillon balanced beam scale to replace the Lee scale.  I started crawling first and went up from there.  A lot of reading and no internet or You tube to watch.  I load and shoot probably 500 a week.  Never had a problem or blown up a gun.  You have to be very cautious.  I worked with a guy that started reloading.  Poured some powder in the case and set the bullet and blew the cylinder our of his 357.  He didn't measure the powder.  Just filled it up.  He quit reloading.

the price of the press, a gun and a trip to the ER, not sure what that adds to but lets say you save 5-7 cents. Takes a lot of rounds to break even.
I know I don't and many don't reload to save money, its a hobby. But if your hobby cost you more than money like a finger or two or worse it might not be worth it.
I don't know why anyone would not want to start with a singe stage is beyond me, it is something you will use even after getting into a progressive.
 Hope he learned.

I don't think he will ever master the X-10 there is just too much stuff for a novice to learn and too many easily broken parts. My offer of letting him learn the basics on one of my RL550's is still open.

Yep.
Got my reloading feet wet early 80's via RCBS rock chucker------------- that I still use along side a Hornady Ammo Plant.

Lewmed - What is your friend's take on reloading now?  Is he going to continue?  Hopefully he heals up well - physically and emotionally.

I have had both ends of the spectrum....An acquaintance friend found out I was reloading and I mentioned how it is nice to have the best ammo for my gun.  He started reloading on his own - and I could NOT convince him that all 124gr bullets were NOT the same - and there are load data for different styles of the same weight.  He successfully damaged a gun, but no stitches for himself.

Recently a coworker wanted to me to teach him to reload.  Started on a LNL - he is very careful, understands what can happen if you are stupid/inattentive.  So far - he has done well.  He has allowed me to help him with OAL, powder selection, etc.  I'm having fun helping and now have another shooting buddy.

If it goes "boom" or "vroom" I'm intersted.

I'm not sure what his plans are all I know is he has plenty of time to decide. He has been tinkering with the machine and has broken some bearings and a couple plastic parts on the X-10 that are on back order for who knows how long. He seems to be obsessed with speed and told me my Dillon equipment was too primitive for him so I'm going to keep my distance and just see what happens.

He watched too many YT reloading videos. "Hey, yall ! Watch this !!"

...and told me my Dillon equipment was too primitive for him so I'm going to keep my distance and just see what happens.

So just tell him that you'll race him; you on your Dillon and him on his X-10. And when he agrees, just say "I'm starting now."

Longevity beats Fast any day of the week. I thought we all learned that in kindergarten with the fable of the Tortoise and the Hare. Maybe not.

After waiting for over a month for X-10 replacement parts my friend has been learning to reload on one of my Dillon 550's and is ordering a new xl750 with strong mount and case feeder next week. When his backordered x-10 parts arrive he says it will go on the auction block. Right now he is keeping busy removing all the surface rust from the x-10 that has accumulated while sitting idle for a few months so he can sell it.
