No 200 yard range report this week. Fires in Ruidoso, NM
« on: June 19, 2024, 10:00:56 AM »
We got the alerts mid morning Monday to evacuate the entire village due to two fires in the Ruidoso area.  We were still in Central Texas so we cancelled the trip to Ruidoso scheduled for Tuesday morning.  As of Wednesday morning, today, there are fires to the north and south of our house in Ruidoso, but looks like the parts of town to the north of us are getting hit hard and the fire to the south is moving northeast so the racetrack area may also get hit.  Rains expected Thursday, hopefully before the winds shift and clobber the central and southern side of town at least.  Its a mess there right now, with the full time residents hardest hit.  No need to worry about us part timers, its up to God and the firefighters now or the whole place will burn to the ground.

I'd go to the range here in Central Texas if I thought I could shoot without thinking about my friends in Ruidoso.  Waste of ammo.  I'm staying home.  Maybe some dry fire?  No, not even that.  I'll play with the video cameras and shoot some dragonflies or something.

We were tossing around the idea of going there for a week or two to get out of the heat. Hope the firefighters can keep the town safe. We love the area and the people. They literally are in a very tough spot.

Our house is a little south of the R in Ruidoso in that screen shot.  Winds have shifted towards the west today so maybe most of the old part of town will be spared before the rain comes, and, hopefully, shuts this all down.  Looks like the ski area and lots of structures on the northwest side of town are down.

Wow that’s really sad if the fire swept through there: it’s beautiful. I tried the Apache Ski webcam a saw it was down last night.

We were in New Brunswick & Nova Scotia last year during their big fires, and even though we were miles away the smoke made things very uncomfortable. No panoramic views. Hard to breathe, even indoors. Limited airplane flights into and out of the area. Not a real fun time.

You made the right decision.

Ruidoso got some rain last night, so maybe things will settle down.  West and far north sides of town got hit bad, maybe 1/4 of the town structures burned down.  Our home is fine, we think.  We will see how long it takes to restore the utilities before we make any plans to go see for ourselves.  Shooting range area is fine.  :)

Lots of burned out full timers will be looking for living arrangements, including some of our friends that retired there from Midland.  We'll see what we can to help them out "when the smoke clears".

Had a summer home near Ruidoso for about 4-5 years and then my work transferred me back to AZ.  We were in the Alto area not too far from the Alto Post Office and Bonito Fire Department.  We go back every couple of years to visit.  Absolutely love the place.  Everyone in the area is in our prayers.  Best wishes..

Ruidoso is opening back up, confirmed our place is fine.  We won't go there for a few more weeks, however.

I did go the local outdoor range on Tuesday to shoot the P-10S at 100 yards, but 12 days off resulted in some poor target results.  I even messed up the settings on a video camera.  I'm working on the cameras today, will return to the range on Thursday morning, I hope.  IF I shoot well, and IF I don't screw up my own video gear again, there will be a video on Friday, probably the P-10S, if I settled back down from Tuesday's embarrassment.
