Optic cut on PO1
« on: June 05, 2024, 12:30:55 PM »
Sorry, but here goes the newbie question that I sure has been discussed ad nauseum. I finally bought an EPS carry for my CZPO1 (generally my EDC) and started to read up on the companies that mill slides and see that some will not remove/mill out the rear dovetail. Trying to find out more specific information as to why some do and some don’t and was told by one that it affects an internal safety. I think with the built-in rear sight on the optic (and I know it’s not the best) makes things a bit busy to have the original rear sight as well.  Educate me!  Thanks

Take a look at Wager Machine Works.  They may be able to help you out and they have good reviews.

I just sent my P-02 slide to Primary Machine to be milled for a Holosun 507k.  They will mill out the rear sight dove tail.  I personally chose to mill in front of the dove tail, since the 507k can be placed so low you can use the standard sights.  In any event, Primary Machine gets very high marks for quality work and they're very familiar with working on CZ pistols, including the P-01.  Many places work mainly on Glocks, so be sure the shop knows CZ pistols.  All of the shops suggested so far are big names in the business and will likely take very good care of you.  A more important decision may be what color Ceracoat to use after the milling ;D. I went with Titanium.

I used Wager Machine Works to mill my P-01 slide and I'm very pleased with the results. The work is top notch, the price was very reasonable and it took less than two weeks from the day I shipped my slide out until I received it back.

I'm looking to do the same, but I think I am leaning toward keeping the sights and milling in front of the cut out.

Question:  I assume not, but does anyone have any thoughts on if the milled position of the red dot affects use/finding the dot in any way?  In other words, is there a better position if all you are considering is DOT acquisition?

I've heard (although I can't cite which person or persons in the training sphere it came from) that having the rear sight in front of the optic (farther from your eye) will help you acquire the dot faster. The logic is that with a traditional iron sight placement (rear sight behind optic and closer to your eye), you will align the iron sights like normal and then focus on the dot. While that makes sense to me, and I'm sure whoever the source is has plenty of time on handguns and red dots to justify that claim, I personally don't find it makes a difference to me.

I have both styles, and I neither find myself trying to align the sites to acquire the dot, nor do I perceive I'm faster with one over the other. I like how less cluttered the sight picture looks with the irons in front of the dot, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get one style over the other.

Impact Machine offers either cut, but I'd verify they can do it with your dot/sights/slide setup before you send it in. Also, their front dovetail is for a Glock rear sight, just FYI.
