Have any of you heard of factory second primers ?
« on: October 09, 2024, 12:32:36 PM »
A friend of mine was wanting to learn to reload so I set up one of my unused Dillon 550's to load 38 spl for him.  He comes by every few weeks with his own supplies and loads a few rounds. The last time he was here he had some White River factory second small pistol primers. I've been loading my own ammo for over 50 years and never heard of White River or factory second primers.

White River Energetics is based out of the USA and is newer to the market.  https://whiteriverenergetics.com/

I haven't tried them yet but folks seem to like them.  The seconds primers were fairly cheap and I wish I got notified about them.  I'd be curious how they perform for your friend.  American Reloading has them in rifle sizes still at last check but the small pistol were sold out.

Cheers,
Toby

I went to the range this afternoon with my friend and his 38 spl HBW reloads with White River factory seconds primers they all went bang and were as accurate as mine using Federal primers.
American Reloading is selling them for $43 per 1000 with free hazmat and shipping.

What would make them "seconds"?  Surely there's a good reason they are less expensive . . .

For some products it's a matter of appearance, the seconds function fine but don't look perfect.  Maybe White River gives that information on their website.

The factory seconds primers are listed as less than .01% low charge. Over the last couple days I've loaded some of my friends factory second primers in 380 acp, 9mm, 38 spl and small primer 45 acp. A few took a little extra pressure to seat but with mixed headstamp brass that is not unusual on my Dillion press. Out of the small number I tested I did have one failure to fire but it worked on the second strike and could have been not fully seated.
I still have a few of the Fiocchi wooden 12,000 round cases and several cases of Federal primers left from before Covid so I'm going to pass on buying any of the factory second primers.

If I had known how much better being retired is than working I would have done it FIRST.
