97 bde light primer strikes
« on: August 24, 2024, 06:37:08 PM »
Finally got around to firing my 97 e today and was having light primer strikes, tried sending a message to cgw and it’s not going through.  Curious should I just get the #15 lb hammer spring?  I think the #13 lb comes with the pro/e package.

Thanks in advance

I'd call CGW, they are really helpful over the phone.

What ammo?  If reloads, are you sure you seated the primer fully?  What primer?  Does it go bang if you pull the trigger a second time?

Do the light strikes only happen with dual action trigger pulls or in single action too?

Have you done the pencil test?  Unload the gun, check that it is unloaded again,  drop a pencil down the barrel with the eraser down, hold it vertical and pull the trigger to launch the pencil.  Does the pencil launch the same height with both trigger pulls (dual action and single action)?  How far does it launch out of the barrel?

Unless you are running ammo with really hard primers (Servicios Y Adventuras come to mind), your 13lb main spring with extended firing pin should light off most primers.

Cheers,
Toby

Ty for the reply.

I haven’t tried the pencil test yet.  No reloads, ammo ppu.  Sometimes third trigger pull primer ignites.  This seemed to happen more when I first started to shoot but stayed pretty consistent with every mag a few failures to ignite.  I think it was all single action.

Gonna call cgw manana, was working today.

Years ago my 97 did the same thing when the firing pin retaining pin got beat up and wouldn't let the FP move all the way forward to strike the primer. I replaced the FPRP with one from CGW's and it's now 100% reliable.

I did the pencil test and only moved the pencil 1/4 inch sometimes a few inches.  Called cajun and sent it to them, hopefully they can figure it out.

What it’s doing is- when you pull the trigger the firing pin is obstructed from moving freely, take the slide off and push the round thing (I think it’s the firing pin block) push up on the round thing and the firing pin moves without obstruction.

I was having failure to ignite every mag.  Hopefully next week the culprit to the light primer strikes will be remedied.  I was using multiple brands of new commercial ammo, no reloads.

Yeah, 1/4 inch is not enough energy to ignite.  You should be able to launch the pencil out of the barrel.

My guess is you have crud in the firing pin channel or you have a timing issue with the SRS lifter (or both!).  CGW will get it sorted.

Cheers,
Toby

So to give a follow up on what went down- finally figured out the issue.

Long story short Cajun gun works was great and they fixed it and covered everything.

Long story long, cgw initially asked for the upper to install the barsto barrel.  Sent top end with barrel and sat on my dresser for years, got a can to utilize the threaded barrel and proceeded to try and fire the gun and that’s when I got the light primer strikes.

Sometimes the barsto barrel also needs to be fitted to the frame- that was the culprit-sent the whole gun in and it cgw fixed it.  👍

Barsto barrels are top notch- just fyi I’ve had issues with 3 of the 4 I’ve purchased- all fitted by gunsmith’s.  The only one I didn’t have any issues with was the one barsto fitted.
