« on: March 20, 2006, 08:58:45 PM »
Does anyone her know anything about these? I haven't been able to find out much about them on the net.  I'm thinking about picking one up in 12G/.223Rem to use as a coyote calling rig.

Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

PS: If I haven't posted this in the right forum please point me in the right direction.

            Thanks

These were discontinued a few years back. You might be able to find one laying around somewhere, though. Not very popular at all in the U.S., so little is known about them. I seem to remember somebody saying that they were real bare-bones types of guns; sort of like the Russian stuff. They work, but are not pretty. That being said, they cost much more than the Russian stuff (especially at the time). I guess you can put two and two together and see why they were not popular. :D

Thanks for the info!  One of the local gun shops has a Baikal 223 over 12 ga that I got to handle.  It is fairly utilitarian looking but just fine for what I'm planning to use it for which is a coyote/predator calling rifle.  This gun is available for $399

The CZ 584's i've found are $700 so I would expect quality to be a lot better for the difference in price.

Like the 584, the Baikal also had a double trigger but they had quite a bit of creep in them.  Would definitely need a trigger job.  The CZ 584 has a single set trigger for the rifle barrel.  I've got a CZ 453 with the single set and absolutely love that trigger.  I was thinking that if the quality and trigger of the 584 at least matched that of my ZA 453 then it would probably be worth the $ difference.

I think the way it was describe a few years back by somebody who had a chance to handle one was that it was a "farmer's gun." Something that you could leave by the door or under the bed so that when something went bump in the night, you could bump it back.
