Is the problem the shooter or the gun?
« on: October 16, 2007, 10:06:56 AM »
First ............let me thank eveyone for the wealth of info I am learning about CZ's - I am a new shooter - enjoy shooting very much - Love my CZ.........I have a question for those experienced shooters - I was at the range today and my PO1 jammed - this has happened to me before - I was told by one of the instructors it was because my grip was not firm (ok) ~ my thoughts are - if this is the case ...and I find myself in a self defense suituation ~ and my grip is at an odd angle or not firm enough - then what ?

How many rounds have you put through the gun?  What ammo are you using?  Is the gun clean? Can we get a better description of the jam? If you do have "soft hands" the recoil spring could be changed to help.

I do remember a report on the cable tv program "Shooting Gallery" that highlighted training with Brue Gray and a statement from Bruce that went something like "you need to grip the gun just tight enough to allow the gun to recoil and return back to battery to fire another shot".

It always helps to get more detail of how the jam occured and the conditions that assisted the jam in order to discuss what might be the problem.

Clean it well, lube it well, switch ammo brands, try a different mag( if the problem is only with one mag). This fixes MOST problems.
I am on my third P-01. NONE liked Winchester White Box.

If your instructor helped you correct your grip, and that fixed the problem, then it will be like any other defensive/tactical maneuver: you must practice many, many times so the correct behavior becomes automatic, requiring no conscious thought on your part.

Thanks again for all your help / here is more details. Ammo, I use Remm 119 gr. Cleaning, every 500 rounds. Total rounds shot 1200 - 1400. Mags, I have two : one - the spring is very tight - the other seems broken in (bought the gun used) Descrition of the jam, the slide dosnt recoil all the way & I can usually see the bullet in the side window. I will start w/ noticing which mag I am using when it jams - I enjoy shooting my CZ. I want to have confidence to know that my gun will be dependable on & off the range - thanks

Is the empty brass not extracting fully or is the slide not closing on a loaded cartridge?

Mine had that same problem and it happened quite often but was random.

My uncle is a gunsmith and he polished something, not sure if it was the feed ramp or what. He also adjusted the mag lips a bit. hasn't caused a problem since then.

I have been having a similar problem and I have sent mine back to CZ for them to look at.  It would not fully eject the shell and jam a new round on top of it.  They sent me a recoil spring, but I am guessing it is the extractor.  We'll find out.  I do not want to replace it.  No other pistol comes close to what I like about the P-01.  I am confident that what is going on with mine is the exception and not the rule.

Be sure to check the chamber -- that it is smooth, no roughness.  A rough chamber can affect feeding (not a common problem), but really affect extraction...

Joe -
I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the ammo I was using. The most popular 9mm target ammo right now is the flat nosed jacketed type, which offers more area to the lans of the barrel. My gunsmith told me the problem is that on "most European 9mm guns" the rifling starts too close to the chamber to use this type ammo. With this type bullet design, with its short angular nose, more of the bullet's full diameter sticks out in front of the case. A test of loaded ammo dropped into the barrel proved him right.

So you might dis-assemble your gun and drop in different brands of ammo to see if they fit into the chamber to different depths. When the barrel is held vertically, muzzle down, the correct cartridges should drop all the way into the chamber with only the aid of gravity.

Unless you want to have your barrel modified with more lan relief, then you are confined to using the traditionally shaped 9mm bullet which have the pronounced ogive and hardly any of the full diameter portion of the bullet protruding from the case.

Hope this helps.
