New to forum, new CZ, and a range report
« on: December 22, 2007, 01:08:16 PM »
After 6 months of going back and forth between the P01 and an XD-45, I finally settled on the P01.  I liked it the moment I saw it, and loved it when I tried   a range gun out.  So after the gun shop screwed up and ordered the wrong model (they ordered an SP01 instead of the P01), I had to wait a couple extra days   but it came in last night.  Below is a range report.

After doing a quick clean of the gun, as you know CZ packs it in a plastic bag loaded with lubricant, I walked onto the range. With me I had 100 rounds of   Winchester white box (100 round value pack), 50 rounds of Winchester SXT JHP Silvertip defense loads, 50 rounds of Fiocchi, and 50 rounds of Blazer CCI   (given free from the range since they screwed up my gun order).

I started off at shooting 20 rounds of each different ammo at the 25 foot mark. I changed targets for each 20 rounds alternating using a sandbag and shooting   freehand. For the most part all rounds were within the 2.5 inch target center. I was a little right of the target, sights might need a slight adjustment, or   more likely just me. For this exercise I had 1 FTE, I noted this was with the CCI Blazer (aluminum casing).

For the rest of the time I shot at 25, 50 and 75 feet. At 75 feet I was able to keep all rounds on the 12 inch target. I'm not that great of a shot and   with a 4" barrel it shows. Hell, I can barely see 75 feet. I also shot both strong hand and off hand. I shot a total of 220 rounds. In total I had 3   FTE's, all caused by the CCI Blazer. No problem at all with any of the other ammo.  I have also read on this forum that I'm not the only one who has   experienced issues with the Blazer aluminum.

All told I was extremely pleased with gun. Very comfortable to hold and shoot. I found the double action stiff, as I expected. The single action had little   travel and was crisp. Being left handed I was able to operate the slide release easily with my index finger. The decocker was a pain in the ass, had to   operate that with my right hand while holding the gun with my left. Not that big of a deal, the only time I use the decocker is when I initially put one in   the chamber, when I carry.

Welcome. Blazer will cause problems in SOME pistols. If you want more mags try CDNN. They sell Mec Gar mags, who makes them for CZ.

I happen to own both the P01 and XD45 (5" Compact version). Both were developed and manufactured in eastern Europe, the XD being from Croatia. Both are excellent designs but quite different guns. I found the P01 to be a be the better carry weapon and the XD to be a better range gun. However, the 22LR Kadet conversion kit is a very enjoyable range plinker. You should seriously consider buying the 22 conversion kit. It will help you practice the P01 trigger and controls. Unlike you, I did not like the P01's stock single action trigger pull and gunsmithed it myself. It's much better now.

Can't swing the converstion kit right now, but it's something I want in the future.  My kids like shooting .22, plus maybe I can get the wife to go shooting with me.  But I won't hold my breath on that one.

Rugeroh,

Enjoy your new CZ, and welcome to the forum. I wanted to compliment you on the concise review. Nice pictures, too.

Ahoy Rugeroh!

If you're not in a state that limits your magazine size, and got 10 round magazines with your P01, call CZ-USA. They'll be happy to take your 10 round magazines and exchange them for normal capacity 14 round magazines.

It may take them a while to get them to you, so I recommend buying a couple more before sending off the 10 rounders.

That's what I did.
