Finding the right CZ for me
« on: April 24, 2008, 04:30:02 AM »
I have been shooting for many years with friends but never serious target shooting.  After shooting some steel recently, I am hooked. I am researching the local clubs now but my schedule sucks. Hard to find time to meet up with the locals. So I plan to expand the range that I have to get my practice in.
I currently have an XD40 with enough goodies that I think it would do well in the Production class. But it is the .40.  After talking with the guys at the Custom CZ shop, I want the 9mm for this class.  I do reload.  I have a Baby Desert Eagle in 9mm. I have re-sprung it and love to shoot it but the trigger could be a little better.  Not as good as my XD's Springer Precision Trigger but not far off.  But I love the feel of the Baby Eagle.  That is what has drawn me to the CZ's.  I have been looking at the TS and SP 01 Customs. I like the CTS that is in the workings but am I right that the CTS will not be production legal as the TS in not?  So, it would put me in a more serious class that I am afraid I would not have enough experience.  But I could always use one of my other guns for production, and evolve to the other classes with the TS or CTS.  I really like the  SP01 customs but I guess its just the idea of having another service type, tactical rail type, normal gun that I already have. (XD40)  No, I will not sell my XD.
Would I be out of my league getting a limited class pistol as an amateur?
What else should I be considering as I try to get into competitive shooting?
Thanks

There are beginners and experienced folks in all Divisions in USPSA. You can find a spot in any of them, Limited, Production or even Open. The biggest question is cost for a lot of people. The SP-01 works great in Production Division and shooting steel matches, but not any other division because of the 9mm caliber. The CTS when it comes out will be a custom gun, definitely not legal for Production. It will also be in Single Action, like the TS which rules out Production. The nice thing about Production is you can get all the equipment to shoot it for about $1000.00 and be on par with what the top shooters in the world have (SP-01 $850, 4 spare mags $64, belt $55, holster $60, mag pouches $120ish). And that is all top end gear. If you go with the CTS you'll probably be looking closer to $2000.00 when all is said and done.

That said, Limited is fun also. High cap mags, with a gun like the CTS would be a blast to shoot. You've got an XD40 now. Buy some Arredondo extensions for it and try it in Limited. In the meantime, pick up and SP-01 and come play in Production.

As Chuck..said..there is all experience levels in all the divisions..
if you decided you wanted the TS..you would do well in Limited..and it would take you a long ways..

if you are reloading..down load your ammo.. .40 at minor PF..is soft shooting..and it would do well in Production., or leave it at major and shoot in Limited 10 .or you can get some basepads, magwell, etc. and take it race in Limited. so you have a lot of choices with the equipment you have.

Definitely agree with Chuck. There's no correlation between USPSA division and skill. If you have the $$$$ to compete in Open, you can compete in Open. I was pleasantly surprised (and more than a little shocked) to see that I was only scants seconds behind some Open shooters and their laser blasters my first time out with my Pre-B Production CZ. Like golf, fly-fishing and a lot of other pastimes, I think some people in the USPSA try to make up for a lack of practice and training by spending mega-bucks on their equipment. If you want a TS, get one and have fun in Limited or get the SP-01 (or straight 75B) and have fun in Production.
