Grinding down the slide stop
« on: July 22, 2008, 08:08:20 AM »
Hello, I have a PCR and it is the perfect carry pistol for me in every way except one- That obnoxious slide stop poking out the right side of the pistol.  It interacts with my holsters in the worst of ways, resulting in the grip being swung outward away from my body, not held in close and comfortable like my larger USP 40 and smaller Glock 27.  I was wondering if I could get away with filing the end of the slide stop down some, making it fit a little closer to flush?  I realize I would need to keep the angle on the upper side of it so it can engage that wire or spring inside the frame, but it seems like I could remove a fair amount of the metal outside of the frame without any ill effects, aside from the fact that I would probably need to use a tool to field strip it.  I am not going to be engaging in a months-long geurilla campaign with it, so needing some kind of punch or tool to field strip it is not an issue for me.

Can I safely do this without destroying my pistol?  Is there a place where I can order a spare PCR slidestop (and a Kadet guiderod, CZ is backordered and I lost it) to experiment with?

Thanks,

SPC Mendez

Sure you can grind it back almost flush with the gun, need a tool to take it out after that though

I used a black sharpie to mark the amount that protruded outside the frame, then used a grinding wheel on my Dremel (medium speed) to grind down the amount I wanted to take off.  Then I used a medium sharpening stone to bevel and round off the ends.  Then a flat fine file to taper the flat side and get the edges off.  Then I used 600 grit fine paper to finish it off and shine it up.  There is now about 1/8th inch protruding and it slides in and out of my holster much smoother and IMHO looks pretty much as if the factory had done it. (which they should have).

Good question and post NG VI

Thanks, I am hand filing it, because I have not been bright enough to make money for a dremel yet. It is going very slow, but I am confident it will ocme out nicely.

UPDATE!

The filing is close enough to done for me, later, when I have more and higher quality tools I will make it look real pretty, for now the 600 sandpaper is a good enough finish. I removed a good amount of the slide stop, to the point that I think disassembly without a cylindrical tool, like the retractible pen I have been using, may be impossible. No big deal, pens are in good supply up here. It carries like a whole new rig, I love it. It no longer digs me just for kicks, and it doesn't wave grotesquesly from under my shirt, betraying my carry status to the whole world. I love it, and the 97B is up next.
