Competition hammer and battery problems
« on: March 04, 2009, 06:51:16 AM »
Hi, I installed a competition hammer on my 9mm and it is a thing of beauty. First time out my groups shrunk by 1/2! Wow what a beautiful trigger in it second stage. I am thinking of getting away from the da and install the sao trigger.
The gun has 2-3 thousand rounds through it but after the hammer change and 13# hammer spring it would not go into battery all the way ( about 1/16 short of full battery). This happened with three types of ammo and at different times in the position of the bullet in the mag but it seams to happen more on the first round when I hit the slide release. I saved up all the rounds that got a bit "stuck" and most of them shot fine a second time around, before firing I checked all with the barrel out and they all chambered fine.
I just replaced the return spring with one from wolf and will try this tomorrow.
I was thinking it might be the injector but I will see if it is the spring. There is a noticeable difference in the feel of the new spring, much stronger.
Never had this problem before the competition hammer.

It would be unusual for the hammer change to lead to the problems you describe unless your recoil spring was on the very edge of being too light and the competition hammer creates more drag on the slide as the slide closes.  Make sure everything is well lubricated and that nothing looks odd where the hammer contacts the underside of the slide when cycling.

I lubed and checked for unusual wear. I changed the recoil spring and it was better. Still out of three mags it would not fully go into battery a few times. Better but not great. I am going to try a heavier hammer spring (14) and see if that helps. When the slide get stuck it protrudes out about 1/32 on and inch and there is resistance when trying to recycle to another cartridge.

haaaaaaaa! Found the problem! While putting firing pin lifter back I forgot the spring for the lifter.
