CZ9B Project Complete................
« on: August 21, 2009, 09:26:27 PM »
Well I've been reading the forum for some time and finally made the plunge and picked up a CZ97B a few weeks back.  I'm a Bullseye shooter and I'm primarily a 1911 kind of guy.  I tried out a friend of mine's CZ 75B at the range and just fell in love with feel of the pistol.  Since I primarily shoot the 45ACP, I decided to get the 97B sight unseen.

After shooting it a little, I needed to make a few mods. First, I didn't like the trigger "grit" and the pull.  Second, the sights needed to be changed.  Third, the grips needed changing or as things turned out, a little bit of work.  Otherwise, what an amazing pistol.  Accurate out of the box, excellent grip, nice recoil.....I felt like I was cheating on my 1911's.

So I sent the pistol to CZ Custom for some mods:
Competition Hammer
13# Main Spring
LPA Adj Sight
Fixed Front Sight
Trigger Job
Removal of Firing Pin Block

I also followed the thread of another forum member and sanded down the stock factory grips and stained them.  I also ordered a set of the rubber grips from CZ for a different feel.

I now have a absolutely beautiful pistol.   It shoots 1.5" groups from a rest at 50 ft at my Indoor Range with my reloads.  The trigger is like butter.  A nice smooth 3lbs.  I can't say enough about the folks at CZ Custom and the work that they did.  I highly recommend them.  In all honesty, this pistol rivals my 1911 competition guns and I'll probably give it a spin at a match shortly.  Here are some pics.  Any comments are welcomed.

Welcome to the 97 posse.  I really like the low mount rear sight on your pistol.

I look forward to hearing how it does in a Bullseye match, especially at 50 yards.

Splendid photos as well. ;D

Looks great!  I have a mill and the dovetail cutters just afraid to take the plunge.  Specifically I dont know the depth cuts to work with the stock front sight....or should I replace the front sight?

They replaced the front sight on my gun.  I believe this is the one they changed it to:

I would call CZ Custom and speak to Robert. He was very helpful and would tell you the best way to go about it.  I'm the kind of guy that prefers to use a gunsmith for the more involved type of work.

arjuna70,

Excellent job.  I really like that Bo-Mar rear sight, sweet!!!  I sanded down my original CZ walnut grips to get a feel for a slimmer handle and really liked it.  Shortly thereafter, I installed the Hogues and never looked back.

50' is a little over 16 yards, with practice, you should be able to tighten up your 1.5" rested group at this distance, in fact, it's a given you'll get better and better with that new CZ.  I agree, the 97 is almost like cheating.  Post your reload, and here's mine that has proven to be exceptionally accurate @ 25 yards:

Mixed brass
Wolf LP
4.6gns WW231
Missouri or Dardas 185 or 200 LSWC
1.240" OAL

I'm new to reloading and these are the recipes that I was using as recommended by some fellow Bullseye shooters:

Once Fired (1911) Match Brass
230 gr FMJ - Zero Bullets
4.0 gr Bullseye
or
4.2 gr Clays - 50 yrds
3.5 gr Clays - 25 yrds

I shot all the loads at 50 ft as I didn't have a chance to get to my outdoor range in the last week.  I'll be testing at 25 yrds and 50 yrds shortly.  I'm shooting Ball mostly as I have devoted myself to trying to become distinguished.  If I get some good results, I'm going to use the CZ for the Centerfire portion of the next 2700 Match in Sept.

Very nice makeover arjuna70 ........  and I noticed they had to do some cutting on the rear of the top slide.  Looks sweet,  and I can imagine it shoots great.

It very easily stands on its own for accuracy.  I didn't have any accurizing work done to it and it still groups quite well at 50 ft.  The real test is 50 yrds.  The trigger is beautiful and a nice 3 lbs pull.  If I have more work done I'd like to reduce the travel if at all possible.  I guess I'm used to that short reset and travel of the 1911.  Either way, I'm quite happy with the finished product.

Nice job arjuna, like you, I absolutely love my 97B.

Today, I shot my 97B side by side with a store rental Sig P220 (the .45 ACP I wanted before seeing the 97B), and I have no doubt that I made a good decision (for me). The 97B just handles so well and is a breeze to shoot.

Welcome to the club! :)

Oh, and I agree that CZ Custom has top notch service.
