Considering something odd - Duracoat
« on: November 30, 2009, 02:22:31 AM »
Now the price was enough to make me blanch, but I finally found a guy who does Rhodesian camoflauge for firearms in Duracoat. I love Rhodesian camo, been trying to find some for years - one hat is all I have for all this time - but this was perfect, especially since I finally have it set up right. http://www.galtsguns.com/  I like that he uses pictures with acknowledgements from Oleg Volk, the premier firearm  photographer and owner of The High Road forum.
If I read everything right, if I wanted to get the rifle and ready magazines, (9 total), done, plus EOTech, it would be...*gulp*...$720 shipped. That's getting close to the price of the rifle!
But dadgummit, Rhodesian camo....if I start saving now, MAYBE I can get it done by NEXT Christmas! :)
So, anyone ever use Duracoat on a long gun?

Edited, I had the wrong price, it's a three color pattern, not four, a little cheaper.

Duracoat is very easy to work with if you have any painting or airbrush experience at all. Using stencils should make multi colors easy also.

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

So am I bubby. I was playing Call of duty modern warfare 2 and the Duracoat guns looked very sick specially on an 60 inch TV   ;). I took my VZ 58 to the gunsmith 2 weeks ago so they can get the muzzle brake welded on. Its a new place I found from Calguns called Independent Armament they do their own Duracoats, AR receivers plus modify guns so they can be Cali compliant. Its a small place but he had a SIG 556,Fn P90,3 ARs one camo,3 AKs a few other rifles and in the back a brand new FN SCAR  :o. I know it might not be a big deal for some folks out there but here in Cali this is heaven only 15 miles from my house. I got to play with the FN Scar and wow that is the most beautiful gun in the world. I said how much he said 3500 American dollars but doesn't take credit card only cash  >:(. I got laid off from AIG a few months ago so I didnt have that much cash to get it. But what I did get was a MSAR E4. The Steyr Aug  by name is a assault rifle here in Cali so you cant get that but MSAR is not and I always had a soft spot in my heart for a bull pup. I got the black one but after playing that game I think I should have gotten the Green or Tan. 1800 dollars was a bit high but I can switch between 223 REM, 7.62 x 39mm, 5.45x39mm. 6.8 STC with just a simple barrel and bolt switch. It works with AR mags and their customer service is excellent just like our friends at  Czechpointusa. I will post pics with the completed VZ 58 muzzle brake soon  I might get a VZ 58 in 223 for Christmas and do it all camo with a scope.Something to think about till then so I can get that dam FN SCAR off my mind lol

I appreciate the links for the colors and stencil, but i am a fumble fingered idiot when it comes to painting anything, I'd screw it up, and would want a professional to do it, which is why it costs. the major part is the mags, the gun itself would be just over $200 IIRC, and the scop $40 or so, plus $40 shipping.
Man, that looks good...and Rhodesian is the best dadgum bush pattern ever made, perfect for Arizona scrub desert.
Never had a camo'ed firearm before, unless you count putting WalMart camo tape on a Yugo SKS a few years ago...that lasted about a week and left goo.

You do need at least SOME painting experience to do a good job. Helps $ wise if you have the compressor and painting equipment also. For plastics you need sandblasting too so that is likely some of the cost too.

Don't rub it in dear. I think what you want to do is strange, but I have known you for 14 years. If you didn't so something like that I would wonder if there was something wrong with you.

Mrs. Armoredman -

In the end, I think it would be far cheaper and more effective to

Spraypaint your husband in Rhodesian Camoflage, waterbased paints.

Then you can teach him to do it himself, in the morning,

After he shaves.

cheers,

salskov

Is there a specific pattern that is Rhodesian camoflage or is it more than one type of pattern? Do you have a picture or a link?

KFD147:

Click on the link in larryflew's first reply above.  A site will open showing an AR-15 in Rhodesian camouflage.

To me, the only real distinguishable difference about Rhodesian camouflage is the "blades of grass" as shown on the bottom of the magazine, pistol grip, receiver and front of the forearm.  But it does make it a distinctive pattern, known the world over at one time, before Rhodesia became Zimbabwe.  Because of a lot of exposure in the 70's in Soldier of Fortune magazine, Rhodesian camouflage became associated with mercenery soldiers.  I always thought it was a cool pattern.
