CZ-50 issues
« on: April 21, 2010, 04:23:34 PM »
While firing my recently acquired CZ-50, I run into a fail-to-feed that looks something like the image below. It does it about once per 8 shot (loaded to 7) magazine, on all 3 magazines (2 original, one aftermarket). It does not happen at the same order in each magazine either. Sometimes it happens on the first shot, sometimes randomly throughout the stack (never had it happen on last shot).

Also, its about a 1 in 3, if the last shot will hold the slide open or not.

I had 3 people try shooting it, in addition to myself (to check for limpwristing) and it's repeatable for all of them.

The previously fired bullet ejects just fine (actually has a pretty decent throw distance) but when this fail to feed failure occurs, the slide grabs the bullet feeds it forward, but before the bullet nose makes it into the chamber, the bullet front rotates up, and sits in the action, visible through the ejection chamber, vertical. I've already read on the forums here, that the magazine can be the issue, and drummel'ing out a half moon shape on the front lip of the magazine might help. If that were the case here, wouldn't my bullets be getting jammed primer-side up after the nose caught the mag? Unless of course, it's catching, rotating a full 180 degrees, and finishing nose up...

There is a known issue with the CZ-50's not liking hollow points, but I was shooting FMJ winchester white box ammo (the only ammo in .32 auto I could find in town). The bullets are a bit flat nosed, which may mimic hollow points, but I can't compare for lack of available round nosed FMJ (ball ammo) and hollow points. Also, I've heard that the newer bullets are more timid versions of .32 than was originally available for this caliber back at the inception of this firearm. I've read people trying to find weaker recoil springs to compensate, but they haven't had much luck, without having to trim them down manually, until they got a good tension, which still didn't solve all the ammo issues, but "seemed to help" some. Sounds subjective at best.

I did note a scratch running the full length of the casing on the bullets, and it looks like the little sharp point (on the hold-open latch/ejector) that catches the magazine after the last round has been fired, to hold the slide open, may be catching the brass... but not every time. It is designed to move up and down, but I noticed a little side to side play in it as well.

I've also read something about people polishing the feed ramp... any info on how to do this? It sounds easy enough, just want to cover my bases.

Any ideas? Is this a frequent malfunction type for these semi-auto's? The only other semi-auto I own is a Ruger P89, and that sucker is "bullet proof" and flawless.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Polishing the ramp is a good first step to try (It worked for my CZ 70)  I used a Dremel tool and the polishing compound that comes with the set.  The hold open latch problem is a new one to me.
