Recoil spring guide
« on: May 31, 2010, 08:53:38 AM »
I guys, I got a CZ-Tactical few months ago and it's more than I expected, what a shooter :o      I am thinking of replacing the plastic recoil guide with a metal version. I read some time ago that metal is not as easy to install as they do not flex, other than that I am thinking of getting one and thoughts?

Thanks for your input, Enrico.

From the CZ Custom site:

"CZ 75 Stainless Steel FULL LENGTH Guide Rod

CZ 75 Stainless Steel FULL LENGTH Guide Rod for the CZ 75/85  family.
Fits in the SP01 and SP01 Shadow and CZ 75's (with hole) without further modification.

Guide rods may be a little awkward to install using Flat Wire Spring.
We suggest purchasing the Wire Recoil Spring.

The flat on the guide rod back needs to be aligned with barrel feet for installation.
Slide must already have the hole drilled for long guide rod.

We have found some tolerance difference in the CZ 75 SA slides.
The guide rod can be out the front, flush or inside the hole.  The gun will still work just fine.
Also some slide holes may be a little tight.
SP01 and Shadow all seem to be fine.

Head Diameter is 0.397"
Shaft Diameter is 0.205"
OAL 3.8"

This guide rod is the same as the one fitted in the CZ 75B 40S&W gun."

Hope this helps.

No benefit whatsoever except looks.

I modified a couple 75's to accept full length guide rods, (drill out the slide and ream out the spring tunnel)
I made .250" diameter full length guide rods out of stainless to eliminate the stepped diameter of the .40 rod (have that gun too).
After that, I made a tungsten guiderod to the dimensions I wanted.

My conclusion is that FLGR's are useless on CZ's except to add non-reciprocating weight to the front end, which is allready too heavy on an SP-01.

I can't vouch for any benefit or not to having the FLGR;  but I can say the short plastic guide rod in my 9mm 75B is still working smoothly after 15-20K rounds.

Some may not agree, but I had SS guide rods in both - Shadow and SP-01 Tact. for a while and guess what? Switched back to factory plastic one. On both guns. No benefit or advantage I can see...

That's my main concern longevity, but 10-20K and no issues, well in that case I'll buy couple of more plastic rods and I?ll be set for life  :P They feel so flimsy but thanks for your affirmation ;)

Hi, first about - sorry for my bad english.

Some time ago I was interested in the "Shadow recoil spring guide problem", because I really hated that awful piece of plastic in it, so I started my search and got some experience about it.

Somebody here wrote a quote from czcustom (http://czcustom.com/cz_75_sp01-stainless-steel-guide-rod.aspx), but I absolutely dont believe in the thing displayed there - plastic rod simply needs to be "flexed" to install (into Shadow), and I cant imagine to do that with the one on picture... WITHOUT FURTHER MODIFICATION?? (mod.of what-rod, slide?) Honestly - maybe it is some kind of joke  ;) and if not, then standart SP-01 must have something different inside, but if I know, it doesnt.

So, one guy from our forum solved that problem in his shadow this way:

and yes, that rulez - this really works without further modifications - lets compare it with the czcustom one and you will see the difference and imagine what I was talking about.

But my friend - gunsmith - solved it for my Shadow and for my absolute satisfaction in this way:

This is only a copy of classic 75 rod, but it works perfectly, installation cant be more simple, looks cool and it is much more funny than that original plastic crap ;D

DYKMORE, that is different  ;D

Ok, how can I get a rod like that and I assume that you are using the same spring?

Let me know, thanks  :)

Yes, I use the same spring.. But I absolutely dont know where to get that rod in the USA - I am from Czech republic  ;D and as I wrote - it is home-made.. The one thing I can do from here is send you dimensions, but I  think they are the same as the bulky part of plastic rod.

DYKMORE,

I just took my CZ apart and the plastic guide rod is narrow all the way (4.8mm dia.) it has no wide part mid way like the picture. They must have changed the design since then. I will take the dimensions of my plastic and get one made in stainless replicating the dimensions and see how it works.

Thanks, for your help!

youre welcome, but now it really seems that SP-01 has something different inside than Shadow (of course except firing pin block) ...could you post some pics here, please?

DYKMORE, The guide rod piece is like your picture of the black plastic part but it's the same diameter (4.8mm) from the front to back of the flange, it actually loooks like the CZCUSTOM (but in plastic).
