SP01 feel vs. 75b
« on: June 14, 2010, 11:08:14 PM »
I have a 75 Stainless that I absolutely love, but don't want to modify and ruin for USPSA limited. I also have Davidsons Lifetime Guarantee that I don't want to void by converting it to SA. I think I'd rather modify an SP01, but my only concern is the difference in feel between the two. Does the SP01 feel very similar to the 75b? I shoot really well with my 75b, but am considering an SP01 due to the advantages in weight and ammo capacity it has over the 75b (also - 75b mags aren't too short for an SP01 are they?).

I am well familiar with the 75b action, and have done a full trigger job on my 75b. For plans - I have a 13lb and 15lb mainspring, firing pin block delete, and 2 way adjustable single action trigger on the way from CZ custom, but don't want to put them in my stainless and void the warranty. This would be a USPSA limited minor gun.

I just want to make sure that my experience with the 75b platform will easily transfer over and between the 75 and the SP01.

Thanks!

Here are my personal opinions:

I had 85Combat and SP-01 at the same time and ended up selling Combat - it felt way to muzzle light to me. Balance of Combat felt wrong. Accuracy suffered with it where I shot much better with SP-01.
Then I discovered Shadow, still have both :)
Personally, I think it makes no sense to competitevely shoot Limited Minor. Either go with 75SA in .40 and shoot Limited and IDPA ESP with it or 1911 or Tactical Sport in .40 to shoot Limited.
If you are new to the sport, have limited budget or don't know which way to go and whether you'll be shooting competively 2 years later - shoot what you have and work on improving.

If I were to start over again with what little I know now and little experience I got - I'd go with Shadow for IPSC/USPSA Prod from scratch.
Most likely would use either Tactical Sport or STI Edge in .40 for Limited and STI Spartan for IDPA CDP/ Single Stack.

With your Stainless gun - it can def use better than factory sights, and shiny guns tend to distract/blind shooter while running, turning, shooting and reloading outside on a sunny day.

Grip wise - both 75B and SP-01 have same angle, you won't need to re-learn or adjust there.

It's hard to even attempt to advise you on what to do. You need to decide yourself.

Why do you suggest the .40 over the 9mm? I am somewhat confused about the minor vs major designations. For an ammo cost stand point and interchangeability between my guns I'd like to stick with a 9mm. It's also easier to shoot recoil wise.

What kind of hinderance does the minor designation have in USPSA? Are Major shooters handicapped, or is a it a completely different division? I only shoot factory ammo right now. I'm just starting out in USPSA and only have one match under my belt, but I feel I did really well. It was 3 fairly simple courses, but I averaged probably 3 A's to every 1 C. I had one Mike on my second shot because it just barely grazed the white target which bordered the A zone, but that was my only Mike. I was normally the second fastest shooter in my group, second to a guy in limited with a comped and red dotted STI 2011 in 38 super.

I planned on making my CZ 75 stainless my minor gun, and buying a Glock 34 for production since I prefer a consistant trigger pull for all shots, but I'd rather keep the 75 DA for production and build a decent limited CZ. Either a 75 with adj sights, SA trigger, full action job, 13 lb mainspring, firing pin block delete, longer firing pin for about a 3.5lb trigger pull, or an SP01 with similar mods.

Nevermind, I read up on it. Seems as if one can't really be competitive with a 9mm in limited. bleep. I really want to be competitive, next year I will be joining the USPSA and doing every match I can. I really don't want to go to a Glock 34 and compete in production with it, but it's starting to sound like the best choice. Ugh... Glock ergonomics suck.

Maybe my CZ will just be fun range gun, and an IDPA ESP gun. BUT, can I take out the firing pin block on an IDPA ESP gun?

Why not join USPSA today and shoot your stainless in Production Division? Get some experience shooting local matches and then decide on your next gun.
You can buy couple SP-01 mags and shoot a few matches in Limited (minor) to get a feel for it.

Because I don't care to be ranked yet, and I don't need to be a USPSA member to shoot local matches. I'd rather put the $35 towards entry fees.

Read up on the Shadow, it is real competitive in Production.  Plus, you get the CZ ergonomics.

The biggest difference I feel is in weight. I haven't tried carrying it all day, but for range shooting the extra weight is great, and the gun balances very naturally -- an improvement on the 75 (which is also nice).
