Weird mag problem.
« on: April 13, 2011, 05:51:38 AM »
Hey I was wondering if anyone here would know what is causing the bullets in my mag to be pulled forward like this.

After I release the slide and load the first round if I pull out the mag it looks like this. It seems to do it on almost every bullet and will sometime cause a jam do to the bullet in the mag keeping the bullet in the chamber from being extracted. Any ideas?

The underside of the slide is sometimes a little rough and will drag the top cartridge forward. Polishing this area should help.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

what E. Shell said.
center rail on the underside of the slide and the edge of the breechface.
polish the rail, you can cut an angle on the breechface if you want and then strong mag springs will help keep the round in place.

Did you strip the paint off the mag?  I've never seen a polished (or bare metal) one

a little more info...the gun is only about 6 month old and has probably 1 thousand rounds through it. I have polished the center rail, do you think I should sand it to remove some material? also could you go into more detail on changing the breechface. I hope the mag springs are not weak for how new it is so thats not something I had even thought about, might have to get some extra powered ones from wolf.

and this is just a stock mag I didn't do anything to it, i'm guessing it probably just looks a little funny because the pic was taking from my phone.

The leading edge of the breech face (red in the pic--Stuart's I think) can pull the next cartridge forward as it strips the top one off.

Just bevel/sand (and smooth)  a small area of the edge so it can smoothly slip over the next cartridge.

Hope this makes sense.

well polished the snot out of it, looks like glass now went all the way up to 3000grit and then some fine polish. Still having the problem though so and guessing the only thing left is the mag springs. At wolf springs there is 5% and 10% over but it says that they are for the eaa witness and that if used in the cz its more like 10% and 15% over. IS there any disadvanged to running 15% over, will it cuz problems? I leave my mags loaded all most all the time so a strong spring would be nice. What you think?

Also thanks for the pic I thought that is what you meant but it cleared it right up for me.

only have one more question at this time, I need to order some stuff from cz custom and I was thinking about getting there mag springs instead of wolfs. cz custom has 5% over and 10% over and only thing I'm worried about is if it's like the wolf springs does it really mean 10% and 15% or is it really 5 and 10. I'm thinking a want a 10% one.  Hope that all makes sense

Last I heard, CZ Custom is using Wolf Springs.  The # ratings have me baffled too.  My next ones will be 10% over.

I got the CZ Custom 5% over, and I couldn't tell any difference from a worn out spring in my mags.  I have seen the SPO1 heavier mag springs cause the mag to only hold 18 instead of the 19 the stock factory spring 'usually' can hold--a bigger spring.

Did you also bevel and polish the edge of the breech face?

yes I polished the center rail and beveled the breech face tho I didn't change the whole angle just beveled it. Maybe if I put a different angle on the breech face I could eliminate the problem.

Here are some pics I just took.

That should do it.  It looks good!

If they're still being 'pulled' of, I would try springs next; but I often have the second best idea first. :-[

I just took another look at the pics.  What 'grit' paper did you use on the slide rails?
What was your final grit/ polish for the breech face?

The reason I ask, is especially on the slide rails, lines are noticeable.

I start with 400 grit and worked my way to to 3000 on the center rail only haven't done any polishing on the slide rails themselfs at this point. I was thinking about maybe doing the slide rails but I didn't know if it would effect the frame to slide fit.
