I've never shot steel at 7yds. It seems mighty close

. I usually use a 1911 in 45acp on steel at 15yds or 50ft. I know that there is a higher probability of a FMJ coming back your way than a LRN or LSWC. A few years ago I saw a fellow hit (read-shot) by a 45acp 230gr FMJ shooting Bowling Pins at 50 feet. The round stopped about 1/8" below the skin just below his clavicle. He wanted to remove it then and there. We convinced him to ride the "big white bus" (ambulance). They removed it it the ER it had nicked his Subclavian artery. He took a pint of O negative.
Probably would be better off with JHPs. I would believe they would "dump" more energy on the plate/target. Just my opinion.
