Just picked up my 82.
« on: February 08, 2011, 07:15:18 PM »
This firearm has the flaking of the painted finish as is so common with others.  Nothing too horrendous, for me.  It does show a slight bit of holster wear on the muzzle.  There is some paint flaking on the front and backstrap.  The grips actually look and feel just fine.  We'll see when I fire it.

The sights:  They are pretty much lacking all white paint now.  No white left on the back sights.  Just a bit left in the middle of the front ramp.  Those sights may be the first mod.  But, heck, I just need a bit of white...maybe.  My S&W 442's sites don't light up the night sky, either.  Not sure I want to spring for the nites on this guy yet.  I'm used to this sight picture.   This firearm also look and feels in the hand like a point and shooter for sure.

The barrel at first looked to have some odd "scuffing" inside.  However I looked and looked and that scuffing seemed to have a bit of a twist rate to it.  Is this part of the polygonal rifling?  I am not in the least familiar with that type rifling.  Feed ramp looks good.

Anyhow, I field-stripped it and cleaned it out pretty well. The gun only came with one magazine.  It was inside the magazine that was filthy!  Wow.  Cleaned that bad boy up and it blackened lots of cloth.

I ordered from J&G. Had no experience with them, but they had them in stock and I don't have a C&R or FFL.  Something to think of in the future.
So one mag, and a holster.  They made no promises of what kind of holster it would be.  Turns out its a shoulder-holster( I've never owned one, thought I was pulling out a jock-strap for a while..).  It's leather, marked "Sig Sauer P225/6."  "Hepco"  "Made in Westgermany)  That's how West Germany was stamped.  Also came with a similar colored leather belt mag holder. Stamped on the back of it is "H R-10  82."  I wasn't sure the mag had space for the 82 mag.  I shoved it in there (hopefully it will come out easily enough).  Perhaps its just never been used as to yet stretch and form the leather.

Importer stamp near the slide reads "C.A.I.  Georgia, VT"

Well, I also ordered an extra mag.  So I need to go and clean it out.

Weather seems to have delayed the UPS truck up north, that contains a box of Brown and Silver Bear along with a box of PRVI.  I would kind of like to manually rack a mag full or cartridges to see how it goes.  Oh well.  I likely won't be able to have time to fire it until a week from now anyhow.

That's my story so far with the 82.  Now to clean that spare mag.

I'm afraid my wife enjoyed holding this gun too much.  I'm going to have to pay special attention to that. :o  I didn't buy two.

If you want to spruce the slide up without investing in an expensive refinishing (really, how much do you want to invest in a $200 gun?), that original finish comes off with standard paint-removing gel. A coat of black Krylon will work fine.

The 82s don't have night sights, just the white dots. I suggest using DayGlo-Orange model paint or any of the bright nail polishes at the drug stores. Both work better with an undercoat of white. You'll be surprised at how well the rear dots and front sight will stand out.

The bore should look almost like a smoothbore, with only the barest spiraling noticeable. It works like a champ though.

The guns are usually very dirty, so a thorough cleaning and recleaning are due. Don't forget to clean the firing pin chamber. It opens easily but keep a finger over it to retain the pin and spring.

I may give it a touch of paint on the sights in the near future.  I really don't mind the flaking as much as I thought I would.  Doesn't bug me too much.  Now, there have been some beautiful photos of 82s on this site.  Perhaps in the future.

I did take out the firing pin and spring.  Cleaned a far-less-than dirty spring, pin, and pin"cover".  I didn't get down into the firing pin chamber though.  Looked through it.  Saw light at the end of the tunnel. ;)

How are you going about cleaning that pin chamber?

Finally figured out how to put on this Sig leather shoulder holster that came with.  I don't feel quite as stupid now.  I suppose there were, and still are, 6-foot tall Chech and Slovaks. :D

I've been babying this firearm in oil twice over.  A little TLC outside and inside.

Won't get to the range for a week :'(  I need to see if this bad boy is fully operational.  Its difficult to wait.

I did go ahead and order a 16.5 Wolff recoil spring, which also comes with a new firing pin spring.  This firearm is an '86.  Probably due for a new spring for a new life anyhow.

"How are you going about cleaning that pin chamber?"

Q-tips work well, as would pipe cleaners.
