Unusual malfunction
« on: October 25, 2010, 08:42:46 AM »
I had an odd and interesting malf for the first time in my life while running a short pistol competition course yesterday with my SP-01 Tactical 9mm.

No fault of the pistol or ammo, and technically NOT a malfunction, yet the gun suffered a stoppage and wouldn't fire until cleared.

During one stage, I shot six rounds from tight to the left side of a barrel barricade, and the empties were bouncing off the barrel and going everywhere.

Just as I pulled the trigger on one of the shots in the middle of my string, an empty case came back down off the barrel and landed between the back of the slide and the hammer just as the hammer dropped. The hammer captured the case sideways against the back of the slide, preventing the hammer from reaching the firing pin. Perfect timing, and I cannot see repeating that with a million tries, LOL.

Took me by surprise, but I used my weak hand to wipe the hammer back and case out of the way and kept going for a decent time. First time for me, and the grizzled old RO said he had never seen it either.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Well you are in good company.  Todd Jarrett lost a major match a few years back pretty much the same way.  He had a large lead against a formidable group of shooters when on the last stage a casing hit the corner of a wall he was shooting beside and landed in his chamber backwards as the gun cycled.  He did a tap rack drill only by tapping the slide he drove the case well into the chamber.  His day was done.  He lost the Championship.

E.Shell:  I guess if it 'can' happen, it 'will' happen eventually.

Too bad you weren't video'd.  That would draw record hits online.

I'd not call in a malfunction, gun didn't fail to do what it's supposed to. It's an incident :)
