CZ 85 B vs. CZ 85 COMBAT
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:41:50 AM »
I'm interested in buying a CZ 9mm handgun and want to have one that's DA/SA selective, i.e. I can leave it cocked-and-locked like a single action, but also keep it in double action ready mode.  Regarding the safeties on these two, the 85B has a firing pin stop.  I can understand how this would be beneficial in condition one carry in conjunction with the manual safety.  The 85 COMBAT has a "safety stop on hammer".  How does this work, and is it as safe for condition one carry?

The safety is the same on both models. It is possible for the Combat model to discharge should it be dropped, muzzle down, from a height of ???? feet, and it lands on a hard surface such as concrete.
The firing pin block in the "B" version would prevent that unlikely event.

Yep it comes down to whether you want a FPB or not, and the Combat comes with about $70 worth of upgraded sights. The LPA sight on the Combat isnt very good for concealment, because it is more delicate and more squarish than the factory fixed sight. Do you require the ambi safety and slide release or would you be just as comfortable with a stock 75B? Any CZ with a manual safety can be carried cocked and locked (the way god intended).

As a southpaw, I wanted an 85-series pistol. I chose the 85 Combat, and as far as conditions of carry are concerned, the 85B and the 85 Combat are the same. I would say that the 85B has added safety though.
However I chose the 85 Combat for its cleaner trigger, the trigger overtravel adjustment, and it is easier to field strip the gun with easier access to the firing pin. The 85 Combat has adjustable sights, which I consider (in general) to be overrated. I have had no issue with the sights though, and I do carry my Combat often. Also, the 85 Combat has drop free magazines. I consider this a mute point, as this is an easy remedy for CZ's pistols that are without.

Thanks to all for the feedback--I do want an ambidextrous model because I'm left handed; however I also learned to shoot right handed with a standard Colt 1911, so I figure why not choose one I can shoot both ways?   The 85 Combat model does seem to have a number of nice features and as far as concealed carrying goes, I'll probably look to a compact or subcompact in the future if I decide to go that route.  Thanks again!

Lefty here as well and chose a 85 Combat for that reason. Now just try to find one!! MikeP another gun you may want to consider if you can't find a 85 Combat (which you won't right now) is the FNX by FN. Completely ambidextrous with mag release, safety and slide release located on both sides of the gun. These are highly underated as were the CZ's  for quite sometime and have a price point similar to the CZ.
These are available from Tanners Sports for under $500 with 3 mags and 4 backstraps.
They are fine shooters and will rival a CZ for accuracy if both are out of the box and no custom work.
I have had a FNP for about 5 years and it's been awesome.
Drawback is availability of aftermarket goodies but that has gotten much better the last couple years.

Have both.  Both are great shooters.  Both were a little finicky out of the box, but once the springs got broken in, they feed everything.  The CZ85B is all steel and the FNX-9 has a polymer frame with a stainless slide (either black or white)  I find the CZ to be a little sleeker and the FNX-9 a little boxier.

Both terrific shooters, tough to go wrong with either.
