Ammo choice
« on: May 01, 2012, 09:31:08 AM »
I can buy a case (1000 rnds) of new PMC 115g 9mm luger for $200.

I am new, I want to get some time on the range. I have a limited budget BUT I do not want to be penny wise and pound foolish. I need help from your experience please.

Top reasons I should / shouldn't buy this ammo at this price and in this quantity?

Thanks,

Jiva

You need to start somewhere.

I bought a case of Dynamit-Nobel at a similar price before I started reloading. I bought that because they were 124 gr and everyone here suggested that was a better weight.

You can use the brass to build your own when you get set up. ;)
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

? You might also want to consider re-loaded ammo from a certified shop such as...

http://georgia-arms.com/9mmluger-2.aspx

or another reloader closer to you.

? Painter makes a good point in that 124gr is going to shoot and handle better.

? If you intend to shoot that much, then save your brass because at some point home reloading may become an option for you.

If you are new to pistol shooting and want to get some trigger time do not worry about the 115gr vs. 124 gr issue. As you are just starting you won't be able to tell the diference, nor will you care if there is any. When I started shooting pistols I bought the chepest ammo from W-mart so I was shooting a mixture of 115gr and124gr and maybe even 147gr (often from the same mag)  by various manufacturers, including PMC.

The important advice, though, is to save your brass. Before you know it you'll be looking at reloading equipment, and starting with a nice stash of 1000 once-fired cases will get you a good start.

If you might get in to reloading, then it's best to buy ammo by the case.  This way you can save your brass that is all from the same manufacturer & lot.  This will result in less variance when you're reloading.

I've had very good luck with PMC Ammunition and consider it a good buy.  No trouble reloading the PMC Brass, either.  :)

I agree with all the above and add, look for sales.  They don't happen often, but they do happen at the bidg stores.
Buy as many as you can afford, you will shoot them.

One further thought before you buy big and go to a lot of effort to pick up and store all your brass....

The one down side to buying lots of cheap ammo is that not all the cheap ammo comes in brass cases with Boxer primers. Lots of Russian ammo comes in steel cases and most of it is Berdan primed. Now you can check the primer easily, but you can check the cases with a magnet before you buy.

Just a thought.  ;)
