My first gun - CZ85B
« on: May 18, 2012, 05:27:00 PM »
I just purchased my first gun about 3 weeks ago, a CZ 85 B. I did a ton of research to make sure I bought the best gun for me and couldn't have been happier with the pick. I have put exactly 910 rounds through it so far with 0 malfunctions. I put the CZ rubber grips on it and will probably change the sights in the near future. Not sure if I should go with night sights or fiber optic. Before I even got the gun I had bought 3 mags labeled as used CZ 75 16 rnd Factory Mags from a local gun and knife show. The mags only hold 15 rounds and the slide does not stay back after the last round has been fired. The 2 mags that came with the gun work fine. Is there something different with older mags that wont let the slide stay back? Everything else seem to work perfect. Oh and on another note, my 85 B has the drop free mags, which was a nice surprise.

My first CZ is the 85B. Don't know about the mag issues, maybe they need cleaning a bit, and then the spring and follower will be able to push up enough to lock the slide?

Mine is very accurate and I really enjoy shooting it.

If the mags only hold 15 they may be for a pre-B.

You'll get your money out of them, and maybe a little more if so.

My 85 Combat was my first handgun.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

welcome.

congrats on your new toy. just be warned.  they will mulitply!

afa the mags, they could be pre-bs as mentioned, but they also could be some other aftermarket.  when buying @ gun shows, its the "let the buyer beware"!

if they dont work, take them back.

I just picked up a CZ 85B to complement my SP-01, changed my grips out to the rubber ones too. I was surprised by the drop free mag's too, something new?

Try changing the followers. My 75 mags would not lock the slide in my 75B. I got new followers from CZ-USA.
You can test the remedy by swapping the followers in the mags that don't work for the ones in the mags that do.

Congrats and glad to here you like your new toy.

I wish I'd had the foresight to choose a CZ for my first handgun. I'd have saved a lot of money and trading around.

This worked for me too on several other handguns I own...good call, chimera8.

Wow you are so lucky! I have had my 85 Combat for a month now and not one single round down range. Just can't find the time to get to the range!  >:(
I'm always happy to read good reports like yours though. Did you solve your mag problem?

are the 15 rounders "promag" brand? if so they are kinda cheap but work. make sure they are clean on the inside. also maybe try new wolff +5% mag springs.

I haven't had a chance to try anything with the mags yet, i will probably try to clean them and change out the followers from my new 16 round mags this weekend. I'm pretty sure the 15 round used mags i got that won't lock the slide are pre-b mags, there are no markings as far as for round count or manufacture or anything else on the used mags. I'm thinking it's in the design rather than just being dirty due to all 3 mags having the same exact problem and all consistently not locking the slide. I'll still clean them to be sure, but i'll probably be ordering new followers for them. Thanks alot for the advice on that.

Yea i shot it a ton the first 2 weeks i had it, now i'm out of ammo and am currently waiting for the Kadet Kit to come back in stock so i can shoot cheap .22 ammo. That 9 mill adds up quick, have to look around for a good deal on those. I was using the American Eagle FMJ bullets and was surprised at having no failure to feeds or ejects out of almost 1k rounds!!

I have already been thinking about getting another CZ, something with a rail so i can put a light on it for home defense most likely, or a Czechmate if i win the lotto. Either way it won't be until next summer before i pick up another, in the meantime im sure i'll have a ton of fun with the 85b. After having my dad shoot it (first time shooting a CZ also) he is already trying to get an 85 Combat for my step-mom for home defense, can't wait to shoot that and am curious on the difference in trigger pull without having the firing pin block.

Thanks again!

Take a look at the picture posted by Stuart in this thread.

While it is about a Kadet the same info applies to magazines in general. If you find that the follower is contacting the slide stop then the springs are probably the problem.

Thanks for the link. Visually i can't see a difference, but i did notice the old mags fit quite loose, the new mags are a nice snug fit with no play once locked in. The old mags work fine for just target practice so that's just what i'll use them for. Once i get more ammo i'll take them apart and try a few things. Going to try to pick up some reloaded ammo this weekend and get more shooting in. Hopefully i'll be picking up my 2nd gun tomorrow, it's not a CZ but it should be a blast to shoot. It's a Bushmaster AR-15, found a good deal so i couldn't pass it up.. Thanks again for all the help

It would appear that your 15 round mags are for the Pre B CZ75 and if so they are highly sought after by the owners of the earlier models. You could sell them and buy new 16 round mags or maybe even trade them. That would solve the problem.
