Reworking CZ 550 actions
« on: September 12, 2012, 06:44:29 PM »
I have noticed on other forums that when they mention individuals going to Africa and other places with CZ 550's that prior to doing so they recommend having the actions reworked and the triggers reworked.  Why is that? I have a 550 in .375 H&H that is extremely accurate and so far I have had no problems with the action.  The trigger is awesome!  Why do they recommend this?  Are there problems with this model? Also I am under the impression that the CZ 550 is the # 1 rifle in Africa for DG.  There seems to some conflicting information.

I hadn't heard that before. Nothing wrong with the action in 375H&H - feeds reliablly. Some 458s give feeding issues. Range of trigger adjustment is excellent and beyond the range of what you'd want on a DG rifle (I never understood the set trigger).

There is an issue with the standard safety. Both my CZ550s (375 and 458) have the same problem, and I've tried it on a couple of others - if you accidently knock the safety on while you pull the bolt back, the bolt can be cycled and closed on a live round but it won't fire. Normally the safety will lock the bolt closed, but in this case you can keep cycling the action but no bang. For DG hunting, I'd replace the safety with a shroud mounted wing style one - there is a one on the market (forget who sells it) and it requires a bit of fitting to install properly.

The only thing I would check is to make sure the rifle chambers properly in all sorts of weird positions.. Straight up, straight down, on it's sides, upside down, shaking around, etc...

Then, I would make sure to fire it enough that you are sure about clean, easy extraction...  No burrs in the chamber, etc...

The most common "Modification" I have heard about is to set it up for 5 rounds in the mag....  Personally - if a guide can get the job done with a double rile (ONLY 2 rounds...) - then 4 in the mag should be enough....

Thanks

The CZ550 magnums are only meant to hold 5 rounds but you can actually load 6 - bonus!
