Can stripper clip guides be milled into the 550?
« on: July 15, 2009, 05:08:51 PM »
Subject says it all.  Does the physical geometry of the 550 receiver allow for the use of stripper clips?  I can machine them in but don't want to buy the receiver with out knowing.

Anyone seen this done on a 550 before?

Caliber would be 6.5x55mm, if it matters.

Thanks!

I really wish someone had the answer to this! I too have the same question.

I have the same question, with sort of a direction.

Can a stipper strip holderbe made to mount where a rear scope ring would mount?

The perfected modification of Boer war era Lee Enfield rifles to charger-loading status involved the retrofitting of a charger guide and the use of a modified magazine to feed Mk VII ammunition. USMC scout sniper rifles are fitted with a one piece scope mounting base which includes a charger guide and this might be the best way to go because it would simplify alignment work. If you speak nicely to your local (genuine) gunsmith, and avoid discussion of finishing times, you might be able to get it as a QD item (either as a scratchbuilt project or modification of proprietary kit).

Best of luck.

A good shot at close range beats a 'hit' at a longer range.

Yes, I think it can be done but a charger clip notch may spoil the rear scope base.  For the best answer I would contact a high power match rifle gunsmith.  These fellows are sure to know.
